Somehow, a fourth Star Trek movie with Chris Pine is still in the works

Way back in 2009, Paramount rebooted the Star Trek movie franchise with Star Trek, starring Chris Pine as Captain Kirk, Zachary Quinto as Spock, Zoe Saldana as Uhura, and so on. That movie was followed up by two sequels. The last one, Star Trek Beyond, came out in 2016.

And then…nada. We’ve heard about attempts to make a fourth movie ever since, but nothing has ever materialized. Speaking to Esquire earlier this year, Pine even said he feels like the movie was “cursed,” particularly after star Anton Yelchin (Pavel Chekov) passed away.

And so the movie project has laid dormant even as Star Trek exploded back onto the small screen with shows like DiscoveryLower DecksPicard and Strange New Worlds. But screenwriter Lindsey Anderson Beer is still keeping hope alive.

Star Trek 4 movie is “still on the tracks”

“It’s still on the tracks,” Beer told Collider about the elusive fourth Star Trek movie. “I love that project, and it was another one that I had to hop off of to direct [Pet Sematary: Bloodlines], and that was a hard thing to do. But I love everybody involved with that project.”

It’s not just Beer saying this. In an article about Hollywood getting back to work now that the writers strike is over, Variety says that “Paramount is hoping to have writers fine-tuning scripts for its planned reboot of Star Trek.” Granted, that could refer to a different Star Trek project that doesn’t involve Pine and co, but clearly the studio wants the final frontier to return to the big screen.

It’s hard to tell when we may get another Star Trek movie, if ever. In the meantime, there’s lots of TV to satiate Trekkies:

Star Trek: The Picard Legacy is a 54-disc boxset all about Captain Jean-Luc Picard

The true Star Trek faithful may be interested in Star Trek: The Picard Legacy, a 54-disc Blu-ray boxset dedicated to Captain Jean-Luc Picard, played by Patrick Stewart. This thing contains all 176 episodes of Star Trek: The Next Generation, all 30 episodes of Star Trek: Picard, all four movies that starred Stewart, and over 35 hours of bonus features, according to SlashFilm. It’s an ultimate collector’s item.

Star Trek: The Picard Legacy is on sale now for $200. Maybe by the time you get through watching the whole thing there will finally be some solid news about the movie.
