Give or take a few reshoots, the second season of House of the Dragon is officially wrapped! It’ll be a while before we get to see it, but at least we know it’s well and truly on the way.
As the months tick down to premiere day, we’ll be sorting through what we’ve seen on set and cross-referencing it with our knowledge of George R.R. Martin’s book Fire & Blood to try and create a timeline of roughly what’s going to happen in House of the Dragon season 2, which will run for eight episodes. And new info is still coming in.
For instance, the Twitter page @housethedragons recently reported that Emma D’Arcy (Rhaenyra Targaryen) and Matt Smith (Daemon Targaryen) filmed a scene together. Getting into the details means getting into SPOILER territory, so nope out now if you don’t wish to be exposed.
Rhaenyra and Daemon reportedly meet at Harrnehal in the last episode of House of the Dragon season 2
According to @housethedragons, Rhaenyra and Daemon meet with a group of lords in the godswood at Harrenhal in the final episode of House of the Dragon season 2.
This changes things from Martin’s book. While Daemon spends a good amount of time at the Riverlands castle of Harrenhal shoring up support for his wife Rhaenyra, Rhaenyra herself does not visit during the Dance of the Dragons. It wouldn’t be entirely inappropriate for her to visit seeing as how Harrenhal is an important strategic location for her and her faction, the blacks. But if this scene does come to pass, and in the season finale, no less, it will be a change from the books.
This also throws into question on what event the the second season will conclude. There are a few big climatic moments from Fire & Blood that would make for a satisfying big finish. There’s the Battle of the Gullet, a sea battle that involves Rhaenyra’s son Jacaerys Velaryon. And at one point (beware another big SPOILER incoming), Rhaenyra and her forces invade King’s Landing. Either of those are big enough to fill a finale, but we don’t have direct evidence that the show is planning for either of them to go down in season 2.
That said, I could see Rhaenyra and Daemon meeting with lords at Harrenhal being a prelude to an invasion of King’s Landing. We’ve heard whispers that the Battle of the Gullet might be moved to season 3. That would throw off the timeline of the books, where the Battle of the Gullet happens before the invasion of King’s Landing, but perhaps they could find a way to make it work.
We’ll find out more when House of the Dragon season 2 premieres on HBO and Max in the summer of next year.
