You can now watch Dune on Netflix!
By Dan Selcke
Good news for the many Netflix subscribers out there: Dune, Denis Villeneuve’s star-studded adaptation of Frank Herbert’s sci-fi classic, is now available to stream!
Before this, Dune could only be streamed on Max. That made sense, since Max is Warner Bros. Discovery’s streaming service and Dune was produced by Warner Bros. Discovery. WBD’s decision to allow one of their big movies to stream elsewhere comes as a surprise, but it makes sense if you think about it. At the end of the day, WBD wants people to watch what it’s produced, and there are a lot more people subscribed to Netflix than to Max. The more people watch Dune, the more people are likely to see the sequel when it comes out in theaters on March 15. (The first Dune movie only adapts the first half of Herbert’s book; Part 2 will wrap it up.)
WBD, which is the parent company of HBO, has been generous with a lot of its content. HBO series like Insecure and Band of Brothers are also on Netflix and have proven popular. WBD isn’t yet sharing its biggest hits — you won’t find House of the Dragon or The Last of Us on Netflix — but the walls between the streaming services seem to be getting flimsy.
Watch AMC’s Interview With The Vampire on Max!
Here’s another example: last year, AMC debuted a TV show based on Anne Rice’s Interview With The Vampire. It was fantastic; a bloody, gothic feast about eternal yearning. Before, it was only available to stream on AMC+, which is one of those streaming services you may not even realize existed. But it’s now available on Max to stream through the end of October!
Other AMC+ shows available on Max include Fear the Walking Dead, A Discovery of Witches, and Dark Winds, a critically acclaimed detective show produced by Game of Thrones creator George R.R. Martin. I may check out that one myself; I’ve heard good things.
Overall, it’s good for fans when streaming services share their content like this. I heartily recommend both Dune and Interview With The Vampire. And I expect we’ll see more of this sort of thing as the big studios continue to figure out the economics of streaming.
