Outlander is currently waiting to start production on its eighth and final season. However, due to the actor’s strike, things are on hold. It will be a difficult series to say goodbye to, and I’m dreading the day the promos start boasting that the series finale is nigh.
Until then, there’s still fun to be had. At the ATX festival earlier this year, Outlander executive producer Maril Davis and series star Caitriona Balfe (Claire Fraser) talked about how the series will wrap up, and who knows the ending. There are so many questions I have about the end, and I can’t imagine that keeping that secret is easy.
So who knows how everything will end, and who is staying in the dark? Find out below!
Which Outlander star knows how the series will end?
That would be Mr. Sam Heughan (Jamie Fraser)! While on a panel, Balfe shared that Heughan knows how the story ends, but she remains in the dark. Has Heughan ever slipped and divulged anything? “No, he smugly holds it over me all the time,” Balfe said. “To be honest, I actually like not knowing.”
Maril Davis is also aware of the ending. “I won’t slip up,” she assured fans. “But I’ll be honest, I’ve read the last like two or three pages – which is supposedly the end. I’m sure that’s what Sam has read, I’m still confused. I keep meaning to ask Sam about it because he’s like, ‘I know the ending’ But, I’m like ‘what the f**k does that mean?’ I’m not sure I get it.”
I’m guessing Heughan likes to give off the impression that he knows more than he thinks, just to give Balfe a hard time. That would be classic Sam!
Balfe isn’t the only one in the dark about the ending, however. Davis clarified that the only people who know right now are herself, Heughan, and Diana Gabaldon, the author of the Outlander books. It’s surprising that showrunner Matthew B. Roberts doesn’t know the ending, but as it turns out, he doesn’t want to know until he absolutely has to. You have to love the commitment!
When Sam Heughan makes Caitriona break into laughter during Outlander takes
During the same panel, Balfe was asked who between her and Heughan was more likely to break into laughter and ruin a take. Apparently, it’s “always” Balfe who breaks first. “ut you know, Sam Heughan knows how to set me off and yet he can keep the straightest face. He’ll do something and then he’ll be like and then I crumble and then he’s like, ‘Oh my god, this thing.’”
“I was thinking how much Caitríona and Sam laugh on set and bringing in the newbies,” added Maril Davis. “But she’s right, it’s a very happy set for the most part and we do talk about being family. I think that’s sometimes overused but I truly do feel that way with our crew and our cast coming in and I think all the cast always says, ‘Oh my god, so much fun on the show and you know, it’s a good group of people.”
Outlander season 7, Part 2 is set to premiere in 2024 (hopefully early on). After that, we have season 8, and that’s it! Check back here for more updates!
