Was that the series finale of Star Wars: Ahsoka? Will there be a season 2?

Last night, the eighth episode of Star Wars: Ahsoka dropped on Disney+. This was the final episode of the first season, and without spoiling things, things definitely left off on a cliffhanger. Is there a second season of Ahsoka in the offing?

Given that the story is very much not wrapped up, you’d think a second season was inevitable. But Disney may have other plans. For one thing, the official Star Wars Twitter account and the official Star Wars Instagram account called last night’s episode, “The Jedi, the Witch, and the Warlord,” the “series finale” of the show. Since then, they changed the posts so they say “season finale” instead, but the screenshots still exist

I’m certain that we’ll see Rosarioa Dawson back as Ahsoka Tano again, but I don’t know if we’ll get another season of Star Wars: Ahsoka. Disney has a master plan for all of this.

Ahsoka will return…but maybe not in Ahsoka season 2

The Mandalorian, which premiered on Disney+ back in 2019, was the first-ever live-action Star Wars show. That first season pretty much stood on its own, with Din Djarin and Baby Yoda going on adventures largely without cameo appearances from familiar Star Wars characters. That changed in The Mandalorian season 2, which featured Dawson’s debut as Ahsoka Tano, a character originally introduced in the animated show Star Wars: The Clone Wars, an arc for Boba Fett (Temuera Morrison), and even an appearance from Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill).

From there, things got even more incestuous. In 2021, Disney+ aired a series called The Book of Boba Fett. Obviously, Boba Fett was the main character, but two full episodes were devoted more or less entirely to the Mandalorian. Like, you wouldn’t understand what happens in The Mandalorian season 3 without watching this show.

Next, Star Wars producer Dave Filoni is planning to make a movie that features characters from all of these series in some kind of Avengers-style team-up; given what happens in the season 1 finale of Ahsoka, I can easily picture them teaming up to fight Grand Admiral Thrawn. So while Ahsoka will likely be back, it doesn’t necessarily have to be in Ahsoka season 2. It could be in Filoni’s movie, or maybe in The Mandaorian season 4.

Is this a good thing? Personally, I think no. I’d prefer it if these TV shows stood alone, but I get why Disney is doing things this way: it wants us to spend as much of our time watching Star Wars as possible, so it’s spreading the story around multiple series and movies to ensure that we watch it all.

There are other Star Wars shows on the way. Skeleton Crew will air later this year and The Acolyte sometime in 2024. These shows would appear to stand more on their own, but given Disney’s master plan, we can’t be sure until we see them.
