Last month, we learned that Game of Thrones star Sophie Turner and singer Joe Jonas were divorcing after four years of marriage. At first things seemed amicable, with the couple putting out a joint statement saying that they had “mutually decided” to end their marriage. But they hit a snag when it came to their two daughters, aged 3 and 1.
In summary, Turner and Jonas disagreed over where their children should live. According to a lawsuit filed by Turner, the pair had planned for their kids to reside mainly in England, and Turner still wants that to happen. Her complaint alleges that Jonas won’t turn over their children’s passports and that he has “wrongfully retained” the kids.
So things have gotten tense. But according to PEOPLE, Turner and Jonas are beginning a 4-day mediation to try and work out their issues regarding custody. The mediation begins today.
Sophie Turner and Joe Jonas work to resolve custody issues in mediation
This does not mean that Turner’s case against Jonas alleging wrongful retention won’t proceed forward; in fact, Judge Katherine Polk Failla has set a trial date for January 2. But if Turner and Jonas can work things out in mediation, it’s possible that a trial could be avoided.
In court, Turner’s lawyer Stephen Cullen said that Jonas is asking for joint custody, saying that “what he was looking for is a 50-50…The parties are both seeing their children, which is what we all want.” Judge Failla agreed with Turner’s lawyer, saying that she “echo concerns about the children” that he has raised.
Hopefully everything works out well for everyone, most of all the kids.
