Thanks to the multiverse, every Marvel series is suddenly interconnected with every other one. We’ve already seen lots of interesting permutations, from Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield returning as Spider-Man in No Way Home to Patrick Stewart returning as Professor X in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Before, the X-Men and other Marvel characters were mostly kept separate, so Fox had the screen rights to the former while Disney had the rights to the latter. But since Disney bought Fox in 2019, everybody will soon be playing in the MCU.
The next big multiversal event is coming in the form of Deadpool 3, which sees the titular Wade Wilson team up with Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine. Of course, these two both come from Fox’s X-Men franchise. But Wolverine died in 2017’s Logan, so it would seem that Marvel is using the multiverse to take some creative liberties.
Sure, bringing these beloved characters into the MCU is exciting, but many fans don’t like the idea of Disney erasing the X-Men continuity that Fox built over the last couple of decades. Thankfully, Deadpool 3 director Shawn Levy has dismissed the notion that his movie will completely ignore Fox’s unique Marvel universe. “Deadpool and Wolverine are iconic Marvel characters; more specifically, iconic Marvel-of-the-Fox-era characters,” he told Total Film.
"We’re not going to pretend: ‘Oh, we snap our fingers, and suddenly that Fox legacy doesn’t exist, and it shaped a lot of what we now know as the MCU.’ Fox also shaped Ryan’s career, Hugh’s career and my career. So there’s a lot of history there, and there’s a lot of Marvel history at Fox. And certainly that’s a part of our storytelling."
Deadpool 3 was filmed in real locations, but there was a big issue
Most Marvel movies nowadays are shot in front of green screens. However, for Deadpool 3, Levy wanted to work on real locations. However, this meant set leaks were inevitable.
“It bums me out that photos have leaked online,” Levy said. “But this is the price we pay for committing to real locations. I made a decision very early in prep that even though Deadpool is now in the MCU, I didn’t want another Marvel movie shot on a green screen stage with digital set extensions.”
Deadpool 3 is slated to release in May 2024!
