No, Netflix’s One Piece didn’t cut the Loguetown story arc
By Daniel Roman
It’s been a minute since Netflix aired its live-action adaptation of One Piece, but we’re still thinking about it. Over the course of eight episodes, the series accomplished the impossible by pulling off a live-action version of a beloved anime and manga that was actually great, as well as incredibly faithful to the source material. One Piece has been captivating readers and viewers for decades, and now we have a whole new way to experience the story.
The adventures of Monkey D. Luffy (Iñaki Godoy), Nami (Emily Rudd), Roronoa Zoro (Mackenyu), Usopp (Jacob Romero Gibson) and Sanji (Taz Skylar) are just beginning; the One Piece manga has over a thousand installments at this point, so there’s plenty more source material for the show to mine in future seasons. Yet for all of the exciting parts of its East Blue arc that showed up in season 1, an important one didn’t quite make it onto our screens: Loguetown, Luffy and his crew’s final stop before heading out to the Grand Line.
One Piece showrunner confirms Loguetown is coming!
While the show dropped some solid foreshadowing for the Loguetown story, such as the inclusion of an end-credits stinger teasing the villain Captain Smoker, many fans were still concerned that Loguetown was being cut from the live-action series. Fortunately, showrunner Matt Owens laid these fears to rest in a recent Reddit AMA, explaining that Loguetown will still appear in the series (via Comicbook.com).
"Skipped? Never! It wasn’t included in season one because our episode number got reduced. And to try to cram it in would not have done service to it or the story it had to share space with. Lougetown is not ‘cut,’ we just haven’t gotten there yet."
Loguetown is an important location in the One Piece mythos. It’s the city where the previous King of the Pirates, Gold Roger (Michael Dorman) was born, and then later executed after his rise to infamy. We saw this depicted in the opening scene of the live-action One Piece, where Gold Roger (stylized Gol D. Roger in the manga) tells the assembled crowd at his execution about his massive horde of treasure, the One Piece. It’s a fitting locale for Luffy and his friends’ final stop before setting out to bigger seas and facing off against bigger pirates. And thankfully, it sounds like we’ll see it in season 2!
In the meantime, if you want to find out what exactly happens in Loguetown, there’s always the One Piece manga or anime. Both the live-action One Piece as well as the anime are available to stream on Netflix.
