After a hiatus brought about the Hollywood writers strike, we got the first new episode of Saturday Night Live in a long while over the weekend, with former cast member Pete Davidson returning to host.
Davidson got good marks for the episode, which included a Barbie parody and surprise appearances from Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce; there was a lot of pop culture to catch up on since the writers strike began! But we were drawn to Davidson’s monologue, which he opened with a prolonged story about Game of Thrones!
Why watching Game of Thrones with your sister is a bad idea
Davidson talks about wanting to bond with his sister, whim whom he doesn’t have much in common. So they decided to get together and watch Game of Thrones, since watching a TV show is a pretty low-pressure activity. Neither of them had seen it before.
Unfortunately, Game of Thrones might be the exact wrong show for this scenario. “It’s the number one show in the world; I had no idea how sick everyone was,” Davidson said. “I thought it was like dragons and stuff, and magic. Hardly any dragons! Lots of incest! Tons of incest! So much incest…It’s a very weird show to watch when you’re trying to find common ground with your sister.”
“I was so uncomfortable watching this, you guys,” Davidson continued. “I wonder how she feels, you know.” I’ll let you know find out how that bit ends yourself:
His sister’s response to all the incest? “Well, it was a different time.”
Game of Thrones has been over for a few years at this point, but it’s nice to know that people can still go back and discovery anew how strange and uncomfortable it could be. And if people weren’t satisfied with all the incest in the original show, the prequel series House of the Dragon has even more! Hoo…ray…?
