See what Zuko, Azula and more look like in Avatar: The Last Airbender remake
By Dan Selcke
Long ago, Avatar: The Last Airbender fans lived together in harmony, sharing an appreciation of one of the best animated fantasy shows of all time. Then, everything changed when M. Night Shyamalan released a really cringey live-action movie adaptation. Only Netflix, master of live-action anime adaptations, could create consensus again. But just when people most needed news of their live-action Last Airbender remake, it went quiet. Years passed, and Netflix is finally ready to share what it’s made. And although what we’ve seen looks promising, we have a while to go before we can know for sure. But I believe that Netflix’s new show could be freaking great.
I base that on some of some new images Netflix just released. This time, they’re highlighting characters from the expansionist Fire Nation. First up we have Dallas Liu as Prince Zuko, an angsty exile determined to get back into his father’s good graces:
Zuko’s father, Fire Lord Ozai, is played by Daniel Dae Kim, who is one of the more prominent names in the cast. He’s not the greatest role model, to put it lightly:
In the absence of his father’s love, Zuko spends a lot of time with his kindly Uncle Iroh, played by Paul Sun-Hyung Lee:
In the original show, one of the characters who regularly stole scenes is Zuko’s sociopathic sister Azula, played by Elizabeth Yu. I am rather looking forward to seeing what she does with the part. Also, it’s interesting that we’re getting a picture of her, since Azula only showed up at the very end of Avatar: The Last Airbender season 1, and had no dialogue. Maybe the remake is giving her more to do in the early going.
Finally, we have a picture of Ken Leung as Commander Zhao, a Fire Nation military operative:

A while back, Netflix released images of what some of the other main characters look like. First up, we have Gordon Cormier as Aang, the titular last airbender:
There’s also his friend Katara, played by Kiawentiio. She’s a waterbender — someone who can magically manipulate water — who finds Aang frozen in an iceberg:
Katara’s brother Sokka, played by Ian Ousley, provides much of the comic relief for the series:
We still don’t know exactly when Avatar: The Last Airbender will premiere, except that it’ll be sometime in 2024. We expect to learn more during Netflix’s Geeked Week, which will run from November 6 through November 12.
