Amazon renews The Boys spinoff Gen V for season 2
By Dan Selcke
Gen V, a live-action spinoff of Amazon’s subversive superhero show The Boys, premiered at the end of the last month. Until now, we haven’t had word about how well it was performing. Do people like The Boys enough to give the spinoff a try? Once they did, would Gen V be good enough to hold their interest?
As it ends up, yes on both counts. Deadline reports that the show has been renewed for a second season. That means a return to Godolkin University, where young Supes compete for lucrative contracts while getting into all kinds of gross, violent shenanigans that won’t come off as quite so gross if you’ve already watched The Boys and know that this franchise likes push buttons.
“Expanding the universe of The Boys with a series as bold as Gen V has been an incredible journey for us and our wonderful partners at Sony,” said Amazon MGM Studios exec Vernon Sanders. “From our first conversation with showrunners Michele Fazekas and Tara Butters, along with Eric Kripke, Evan Goldberg, and Seth Rogen, we knew Gen V would push the boundaries. Their unapologetic approach is exactly what audiences love, and it has helped Gen V become the No. 1 series on Prime Video in over 130 countries. Gen V is Prime Video’s most acquisitive new Original series of 2023, and we’re excited that our incredible cast and crew are going to continue telling brave and bold stories from Gen V to our customers.”
The Boys spinoff Gen V is the No. 1 Amazon series in 130 countries
So there you go: not only has Gen V done well, it’s Amazon’s No. 1 show in over 130 countries. Which countries? Amazon didn’t say. Don’t you want some mystery in your life?
Gen V is also “Prime Video’s most acquisitive new Original series of 2023.” I don’t know what that means, and I can’t help but notice that Amazon isn’t providing any specific viewing figures. But the takeaway is that Gen V has been enough of a hit for Amazon to be comfortable renewing it. That’s good enough for now.
Gen V has an ensemble cast that includes Jaz Sinclair, Chance Perdomo, Lizze Broadway, Shelley Conn, Maddie Phillips, London Thor, Derek Luh, Asa Germann, Patrick Schwarzenegger, Sean Patrick Thomas and Marco Pigossi. Meanwhile, actors from The Boys have also shown up, including Clancy Brown, Jason Ritter, Jessie T. Usher, Colby Minifie, Claudia Doumit and P.J. Byrne.
Gen V only has a couple more episodes to go before it wraps up its first season. The finale lands on November 3. As for season 2, take heart in this joint statement from producers Michele Fazekas and Erik Kripke: “Sophomore year is gonna be wild, with all the twists, heart, satire, and exploding genitalia you’ve come to expect from the show.”
