DC veteran Jay Oliva will direct animated The Wheel of Time movie The White Tower
By Dan Selcke
The Wheel of Time is a hit on Amazon Prime Video. And you know what that means: spinoffs, prequels and sequels! One of the spinoffs Amazon is planning is The White Tower, an animated movie set at the home base of the Aes Sedai sorceresses. The White Tower will follow a young girl with a special gift — probably the ability to channel — whose life is changed forever when evil visits her remote mountain village. She must go to the White Tower to learn how to use her powers to save her family and friends.
The movie is working off a screenplay by Zack Stentz, who wrote the first Thor movie. Now, Deadline reports that The White Tower has found a director: Jay Oliva.
Oliva has spent a lot of his career working on superhero properties, especially DC. He did storyboard work for movies like Wonder Woman, Ant-Man and Deadpool. And he’s directed several animated movies for DC Films, including Parts 1 and 2 of The Dark Knight Returns, Justice League: The Flashpoint Paradox, Justice League: War, Batman: Assault on Arkham, Batman vs. Robin, and Batman Bad Blood. So he’s definitely got animation experience.
The White Tower will be “a fresh and imaginative story” within the world of The Wheel of Time
“I am so excited to be joining this amazing creative team,” Oliva said in a statement. “Reading Robert Jordan’s The Wheel of Time inspired me to become a filmmaker, and having an opportunity to explore the world he created has been a lifelong dream of mine.”
"The rich history of The White Tower has intrigued me, and the expansive backstory of the books gives the creative team the freedom to tell a fresh and imaginative story within the familiar world that was so meticulously crafted by Jordan in The Wheel of Time."
There’s no release date for The White Tower on the books yet. The team is hoping to get rolling on the movie early next year. In the meanwhile, Amazon is working on the third season of The Wheel of Time. This franchise seems like it’s taking off for them, so I wouldn’t be surprised if we heard about more spinoffs in the future.
