Game of Thrones ended in 2019. Since it was the most successful show in the history of HBO, they quickly got working on spinoffs. Eventually, we got House of the Dragon, a show set over 100 years before the original series, when the Targaryens were at the height of their power and dragons ruled the skies.
But the network isn’t stopping there. A while back, we heard that they were ordering a second spinoff: A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, based on George R.R. Martin’s Dunk and Egg novellas. These short books are set after the time of House of the Dragon but before Game of Thrones. So the dragons are all dead, but there are still people around who remember them. They follow Ser Duncan the Tall, aka Dunk, an enormous knight with a simple mind and a good heart; and his squire Egg, aka Aegon Targaryen, a Targaryen prince so far down the line of succession that no one in his family cares if he runs around Westeros having adventures with a hedge knight.
The Dunk and Egg stories are lighter in tone than Game of Thrones or House of the Dragon, and could make for a nice palette change. Like most shows, production was stalled during the Hollywood writers strike. But now that the writers strike is over, it looks like things are getting moving again…
HBO reportedly casting Dunk and Egg in A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight
According to @westerosies, casting may have begun for the new Game of Thrones, which is currently titled A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight (I’m kinda hoping they cut that down a little before it airs). UK casting director Lucy Bevan put out a casting call for two roles that, while not identified, sure sound a lot like Dunk and Egg:
"BOY – aged 9-10 Physically small, the character is wise beyond his years, confident and witty. He has a neutral English accent, and is white with blue/green eyes and pale skin. Must be under 4’6 and at least 9 years old by March 2024 for licensing.SOLDIER – aged 18-25 The soldier is very tall and physically strong. He has a humble disposition and is perceptive and thoughtful. Any ethnicity. Must be at least 6’4.”"
The casting call also mentions that filming will take place in 2024, which is sooner than many expected.
A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight could start filming next year
Of note is that while the Hollywood writers strike is over, the Hollywood actors strike is still very much happening. But because A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is likely to cast British actors, the show probably won’t be operating under a SAG-AFTRA contract, which means they aren’t beholden to the strike rules governing American actors.
We can debate the particulars of that another time. For now, we have ideas for who should play the other roles on this show:
