Good Omens loses co-showrunner, but season 3 is “very likely”

The second season of Good Omens wrapped up earlier this year. The first season adapted in full the novel of the same name by Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett, about an angel and demon who team up to make sure life on Earth isn’t ended by the Biblical apocalypse. The source material having been exhausted, the second season was all new, building toward a never-written sequel to the original book that Gaiman and Pratchett conceived before Pratchett died in 2015. The third and final season will adapt that hypothetical book, bringing Crowley and Aziraphale’s story to an end.

Good Omens has a passionate fanbase full of people who badly want to see that happen, but so far we haven’t heard much from Amazon about whether they’re going to bring the show back. But Deadline brings good tidings: according to their sources, Amazon has picked up options for lead actors Michael Sheen and David Tennant. According to writer Nellie Andreeva, season 3 now seems “very likely.”

Deadline, if you don’t know, it a widely trusted industry source. Their word isn’t gospel, but they have their ear closer to the ground in Hollywood than pretty much anybody. However, it’s not all good news.

Good Omens co-showrunner Douglas Mackinnon leaves ahead of season 3

For the first two seasons, Gaiman himself served as showrunner on Good Omens alongside Douglas Mackinnon. However, Mackinnon recently hinted on Instagram that he was no longer working on the show anymore, literally writing, “I’m not involved with this show anymore,” next to a picture he posted of the Good Omen set. When fans asked Gaiman about this on Threads, the author responded simply: “Douglas has moved on to other projects.”

So that sounds pretty cut and dry. But as long as Good Omens gets the third season it deserves, we can live with it. There’s no release date yet — the ongoing Hollywood actors strike may need to be resolved before we hear anything definitive — but it’s good to have some encouraging news.
