Outlander composer Bear McCreary is scoring Percy Jackson and the Olympians
By Daniel Roman
There was a time when composer Bear McCreary was touted as the “secret weapon” of genre television. These days it’s not much of a secret; the guy and his creative team are everywhere. McCreary scores shows like Outlander, The Walking Dead, The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, Battlestar Galactica, Foundation, Black Sails, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and many more. He worked on recent movies like The Last Voyage of the Demeter, 10 Cloverfield Lane and Godzilla: King of the Monsters. He even scored the latest God of War video games; he hasn’t been announced as the person scoring Amazon’s new TV adaptation, but would anyone even be surprised?
McCreary is a hot commodity, which makes this latest news a big deal. Per McCreary himself, he and his team at Sparks & Shadows will be scoring Disney+’s new Percy Jackson and the Olympians series, based on the novels by Rick Riordan.
“The rumors are true! I am scoring Percy Jackson and the Olympians along with my brilliant team at [Sparks & Shadows],” McCreary revealed on the site formerly known as Twitter. “We are honored to join the creative team collaborating with Rick Riordan to bring his mythical vision to vibrant life on Disney Plus.”
McCreary has a ton of experience scoring these kinds of shows, so this is a great fit. Percy Jackson and the Olympians is a story about a teenager (Walker Scobell) who discovers that he’s actually the son of the Greek god Poseidon. He then goes to a summer camp called Camp Half-Blood where he trains with other demigods. Along the way, he befriends Grover, a satyr, and Annabeth (Leah Jeffries), the daughter of Athena.
The Percy Jackson books are beloved for a reason, and this new adaptation looks pretty promising. Unlike the pair of Percy Jackson movies that came out in the early 2010s, which took such many creative liberties with the source material that it nearly drove Rick Riordan away from Hollywood completely, the author has been very involved in this new series. We’re looking forward to seeing how the first season turns out when Percy Jackson and the Olympians premieres its first two episodes on Disney+ on December 20.
