Spider-Man: No Way Home writers wanted Emma Stone and Kirsten Dunst to appear

Spider-Man: No Way Home was every geek’s dream come true. Perhaps the biggest multiverse event in MCU history, the movie saw Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield’s iconic web-slingers team up with Tom Holland’s Spider-Man. Not to mention we got a rogue’s gallery of classic villains, from Alfred Molina’s Doc Ock to Willem Dafoe’s Green Goblin.
And yet, despite all of these crossovers, writers Erik Sommers and Chris McKenna still fought for more cameos. This comes from The Direct, which ran an excerpt from the new book MCU: The Reign of Marvel Studios by Joanna Robinson, Dave Gonzales, and Gavin Edwards. The book explains that the No Way Home writers originally had plans to include Kirsten Dunst’s Mary Jane Watson, Emma Stone’s Gwen Stacy, and even Sally Field’s Aunt May in the movie.
“Sommers and McKenna, at various points, wrote versions of the story that incorporated Emma Stone’s Gwen Stacy, Kirsten Dunst’s Mary Jane Watson, and Sally Field’s Aunt May, but ultimately cut all those women when they decided that the story was already overstuffed,” the excerpt reads.
Ultimately, the movie decided to focus on the two main female characters it already had rather than bringing in other characters from across the multiverse. “The only female characters with significant screen time would be Marisa Tomei’s Aunt May and Zendaya’s MJ,” the book explains. “Because the screenplay was constantly in flux, none of the actors could read a locked script, and they joined the project based on their faith in [Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige], [Producer Amy Pascal], and director Jon Watts.”

This lines up with what McKenna has previously said about trying to fit Emma Stone into the movie. Turns out there were numerous versions of the script where she was involved. “We went down different roads with different characters that just didn’t fit,” he told Variety.
Obviously, people liked the final version of the movie, which was a huge commercial success. Although it would’ve been nice to have seen Emma Stone and Kristen Dunst, I can’t lie. We can’t have everything though. Who’s to say they can’t join the sequel?
