The Wheel of Time season 2 wrapped up its run on Prime Video earlier this month with its epic finale “What Was Meant To Be.” We’re already chomping at the bit for season 3. Fortunately, Amazon renewed The Wheel of Time for a third season all the way back in 2022; as of this writing, new episodes are already being filmed, and details are starting to leak.

The latest tidbit comes from reliable fansite WoTSeries, which reports that title of the season 3 premiere episode is “To Race the Shadow.” WoTSeries is drawing from the Writers Guild of America website, which has listed both the episode title as well as the writer, Justine Juel Gillmer. The episode will be directed by Ciaran Donnelly, who directed the last two episodes of The Wheel of Time season 1.

What will happen in The Wheel of Time season 3 premiere?

“To Race the Shadow” is also the title of a chapter from book 3 of The Wheel of Time, The Dragon Reborn. That chapter revolves around Mat Cauthon in the city of Caemlyn. It’s unlikely that the show will feature the same events in the season 3 premiere, since Mat is nowhere near Caemlyn at the end of season 2. Most likely the show is repurposing the chapter title. It did something similar with the title of the season 2 premiere, “A Taste of Solitude,” which is a chapter title from the sixth book in the series, Lord of Chaos.

Gillmer’s involvement in this episode has me a bit on edge. She has been working on The Wheel of Time since its first season, penning the scripts for episodes 106 and 207. Both of those episodes center around the Aes Sedai and Amyrlin Seat Siuan Sanche (Sophie Okonedo). Season 3 is based primarily on Robert Jordan’s book The Shadow Rising, which includes a particularly shocking plotline in the White Tower that has major ramifications for Siuan. We’re expecting to see that storyline play out in season 3, but have no idea when in the season the show is going to hit us with it. Maybe it’s coming sooner rather than later? It’s going to be a long, nerve-wracking wait to find out.

The Wheel of Time season 2 is now streaming on Prime Video. There’s no word yet on when season 3 will premiere, but a 2025 release seems likely.
