Netflix is hard at work on a second season of The Sandman, its adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s seminal comic book. The Sandman, as those who watched the first season know, is about an immortal family of siblings, each of whom personify a different aspect of the human condition. The main character is Dream, played to emo perfection by Tom Sturridge. There’s also his cheery sister Death, his scheming sibling Desire, and more we have yet to meet.

That includes Destruction, a boisterous and hardy guy who presides over the realm of both destruction and creation. He’s kind of a Thor type, at least at first; I always thought Chris Hemsworth would be a good choice to play him, in a fantasy world where Netflix could just snap its fingers and get any actor it wanted.

But in the real world, where Destruction will be played by English actor Barry Sloane, according to Redanian Intelligence. The 42-year-old Sloan has appeared in the soap opera Hollyoaks and the military drama Six, but he’s best known for voicing Captain Price in the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare series of video games.

The Sandman casts Dream’s brother Destruction

Standing at 6’2″, Sloan has the look to play Destruction, which is a pretty juicy part. His character goes on a transformative journey, and I’m looking forward to seeing what Sloan does with the role.

And Sloan only one of several new actors joining the show. RI has info on who will be playing some minor characters, including:

  • Daphne Alexander (Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey) is Bromie
  • Tafline Steen (The Athena, Babylon’s Fall) is Xantho
  • Charlotte Bate (Casualty) is Talley

One of the biggest roles yet to be cast is Delirium, the youngest of the Endless siblings. Last year, Neil Gaiman had some advice for people vying to play the role; apparently a lot of superfans were throwing their hats in the ring.

"If you’re going to be in Sandman you need to be an actor, you need to have credits, we need to know not only that you’re brilliant but that you’re also reliable, and that you know how to act for TV — can you do the same scene two dozen times, and still say the lines every time as if this is the first time you’ve ever said them? Can you be funny and break people’s hearts at the same time?"

By this point, we imagine that Delirium has been cast, we just don’t yet know with whom. Filming for The Sandman season 2 got underway a while back but was shut down by the actors and writers strikes in Hollywood. With the writers strike over but the actors strike continuing, it’s hard to say what the status of filming is now. Whatever’s happening, I very much look forward to more episodes. I love the comic and I thought the first season did a bang-up job adapting it. Give it a look on Netflix if you’re interested.
