Doctor Who star Alex Kingston (River Song) teases “juicy spoiler”
By Ashley Hurst
The Doctor Who universe, also known as the Whoniverse, is very much riding high right now, and fans are anticipating big things. Between iconic duo David Tennant (the Doctor) and Catherine Tate (Donna Noble) returning for a trio of 60th anniversary specials later this year and Ncuti Gatwa starting as the Fifteenth Doctor next year, there’s so much to get excited about. And no doubt the future holds more secrets; the return of River Song, perhaps?
In an interview with Radio Times, Alex Kingston, who plays the Doctor’s wife River Song, teased that she holds a “juicy spoiler” about the series. Is she returning? Well, she doesn’t appear in any of the trailers for the upcoming specials, so we’ll have to wait and see. “Am I keeping any juicy spoilers right now? Yes, I am actually, I’m keeping a juicy spoiler!” she said.
Moreover, it sounds like we’ll be let in on the secret when the three specials, which will start airing in November. “Yes, that will be revealed, I would imagine, later in the year,” Kingston said.
Alex Kingston (River Song) reflects on her time in Doctor Who
Thanks to its 60 years on our screens, Doctor Who has become something of a national institution for British actors. Kingston has been a big part of the revival of the series, sharing scenes with three of the Doctors: David Tennant, Matt Smith, and Peter Capaldi. Her long journey in the show has given her numerous fond memories, but which moment was her favorite?
“Every single episode that I was in was an absolute joy to film and we had so much fun on,” Kingston said. As for specific moments, she cites “the very first episode I was ever in,” as well as The Husbands of River Song: “That moment with Peter Capaldi when I suddenly realize who he is.”
"That was such a hard moment to film because I had to – I knew obviously, as Alex – but I had to not know as River Song who he was until he says ‘Hello, sweetie’. It was just very hard emotionally to kind of like, stay innocent of the knowledge."
She adds the episode “Let’s Kill Hitler” to her list of favorites, because it’s “just so out there” and “genius.”
Will Kingston have any more memories to add to her Doctor Who bank? Only time will tell. Doctor Who returns for its 60th-anniversary specials on November 25 on BBC in the UK, and on Disney+ for the rest of the world. Season 15 will premiere in 2024.
