Doctor Who showrunner Russell T Davies is working on two more seasons

It is officially Doctor Who month, Whovians! At the end of this month, we will finally see the first 60th anniversary special starring David Tennant and Catherine Tate (amongst others). We have been waiting a very long time for this, and I cannot believe we are almost there!

And after the trio of anniversary specials wrap up, the new year will begin with a new season of Doctor Who starring Ncuti Gatwa as the Fifteenth Doctor. So there is a lot of content headed our way starting this month. Get ready, ya’ll!

If that isn’t enough to get you hyped, then perhaps learning that showrunner Russell T Davies — who kicked off the Doctor Who revival in 2005, left for a while, and is now back — is already working on two more seasons will do the trick. According to an interview Davies did with GamesRadar’s SFX Magazine, the returning showrunner will be sticking around.

Russell T Davies is working on more Doctor Who seasons

“I’m planning season 3 now, there’s plans for season 4,” Davies said. “Absolutely. Who knows? Who knows. I’m not getting any younger.”

If you are a Whovian, then you know that some of the show’s best episodes were made under Davies’ watch. I cannot wait to see what he comes up with for this new era, which is sort of a “reset” for the series, according to SFX. Davies’ first full new season will air in 2024, followed by the already-confirmed second season, which is supposed to air in 2025.

“At the risk of sounding sanctimonious, but I really, really mean this – they were going to do this to the show anyway and I genuinely thought, ‘It needs looking after,'” Davies explained. I couldn’t agree more. If someone who was going to take on this responsibility, it should be the man who introduced Doctor Who to a new generation of fans.

But before we get to his first season, we’ve got the trio of 60th-anniversary episodes to look forward to. Here is some information on the episode premiere dates and titles:

Joining Tennant and Tate for the specials is Heartstopper’s Yasmin Finney, who will be playing Donna’s daughter Rose, as well as Neil Patrick Harris playing a villain named Toymaker.

The specials will air on BBC in Britain and on Disney+ in the U.S. It is going to be absolutely amazing, fellow Whovians!
