Fans have been waiting over a decade to read The Winds of Winter, the sixth book in George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire series. And they’ll keep waiting, because the book is definitely not coming out this month.
The last book in the Song of Ice and Fire series, A Dance With Dragons, hit store shelves way back in 2011. Since then, the entirely of Game of Thrones aired on HBO. Once the TV show got past the material in A Dance With Dragons, it had to work without any source material, although Martin did tell showrunner David Benioff and Dan Weiss the outline for what he had planned. Still, many fans consider the seasons after the show ran out of source material to be weaker than the ones where they were working off source material.
Martin commented on Winds recently, during a discussion with Mortal Instruments author Cassandra Clare. “I’m 12 years late with The Winds of Winter, as we know,” he said. “I’m just gonna put it right out there, you guys don’t have to pester me about it.”
The Winds of Winter isn’t coming out in November 2024
During the discussion, Clare mentioned that her novel The Ragpicker King is due out in March of 2025, a year-and-a-half away. “The really depressing thing is that still may beat The Winds of Winter, who the hell knows?” Martin joked.
So not only will The Winds of Winter not come out this month, but it may still not be out 15 months later. There’s nothing to do but wait and see.
