At long last, Yellowstone fans will be able to see end the end of their favorite series…late next year. The Hollywood Reporter has it that the second half of the fifth and final season of Taylor Sheridan’s western epic will start airing in November of 2024, on the Paramount Network.
Originally, the final episodes were going to air at the end of this year, but the writers and actors strikes in Hollywood necessitated changes. (The writers strike has since been resolved, but the actors strike continues.)
Also, the fifth season might not have been the final season were it not for star Kevin Costner, who plays John Dutton, the patriarch of the Dutton ranching family. We don’t know all the details, but the basics are that he wanted to spend less time on the series so he could work on his own western epic, Horizon.
Two more Yellowstone spinoffs are coming: 1883 and 1923
But even though Yellowstone is ending, Paramount has no intention of letting the wider franchise die. They’ve already launched two successful spinoffs in 1883 and 1923 (guess when those are set), which star big names like Harrison Ford, Helen Mirren and Sam Elliott.
And now there are two more spinoffs in the works: 1944 and 2024, to be produced by MTV Entertainment Studios and 101 Studios. Executive Chris McCarthy assures fans that these shows “will take audiences on a thrilling, new and unexpected journey with the complex and compelling storytelling that has become a hallmark of the franchise and has helped turn it into a worldwide cultural phenomenon thanks to the creative mastermind of Taylor Sheridan.”
1944, I would guess, will show us what the Dutton family is up to on the home front during World War II. Meanwhile, 2024 will follow up on the original Yellowstone show; there are reports that Matthew McConaughey may headline that show, helping to fill the star-shaped hole that Costner left behind, but there’s no official word.
