Between the Game of Thrones prequel House of the Dragon on HBO, The Witcher on Netflix, and The Wheel of Time and The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power on Amazon Prime Video, fantasy fans have been eating well these past few years. But one fantasy classic which has remained somewhat dormant recently is The Chronicles of Narnia, the seminal work from C.S. Lewis that begins with his 1950 novel The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe.

Narnia has had plenty of adaptations over the years, most notably a run of three movies in the late 2000s. The latest news on the Narnia front is that Netflix is planning on making a new series of films based off the property. Earlier this year we learned that Barbie director Greta Gerwig was attached to direct the first two films. Gerwig is a visionary director, so this was plenty exciting. And now we have a bit more good news: the first Chronicles of Narnia movie is gearing up to start production next year.

The Chronicles of Narnia slated to begin production at Netflix next year

This comes courtesy of Collider’s Steve Weintraub, who spoke with Netflix Head of Film Scott Stuber about the streamer’s upcoming content slate. Weintraub asked Stuber what viewers should be looking forward to next year, which led to some interesting talk about Gerwig’s Narnia. “Well, I think people know that we’re aspirationally trying to get Greta Gerwig’s [The Chronicles of] Narnia together and get that movie, which will be next year,” he said.

Stuber later expanded on how Netflix is balancing original stories with adaptions of classic properties. According to Stuber, Netflix has “tried to be aggressive” with bringing more established works like Narnia to the screen.

"We went out and got the C.S. Lewis library. We went out and got [Roald] Dahl, so we have an opportunity to make some of those animated features around Charlie and some of those great titles. We went out and got some of those video games."

If it gets us more Narnia movies, then I’m not going to be mad about this approach from Netflix. Maybe we’ll actually get a full run that adapts all seven books this time?

As for Gerwig, she opened up earlier this year during the Barbie press tour about how intimidating it is to work on an enormous series like Narnia. “I haven’t even really started wrapping my arms around it. But I’m properly scared of it, which feels like a good place to start. I think when I’m scared, it’s always a good sign. Maybe when I stop being scared, it’ll be like, ‘Okay. Maybe I shouldn’t do that one.’ No, I’m terrified of it. It’s extraordinary. And so we’ll see, I don’t know.”

If Netflix and Gerwig are aiming to get The Chronicles of Narnia into production sometime in 2024, then hopefully there are many more updates about the movie yet to come. Our watch continues.
