Today marks the release of The Narrow Road Between Desires, a new book by Patrick Rothfuss set within the world of his Kingkiller Chronicle series. But The Narrow Road Between Desires is not the next proper entry in that series. So what is it?

The Narrow Road Between Desires is an updated version of Rothfuss’ novella The Lightning Tree, which was initially released in 2014 as part of the anthology Rogues. It follows a day in the life of Bast, Kvothe’s fae protégé. However, The Narrow Road Between Desires has new writing from Rothfuss, as well as 40 new illustrations by Nate Taylor.

Taylor also contributed illustrations to The Slow Regard of Silent Things, another Kingkiller novella, this one about Kvothe’s friend Auri. The Slow Regard of Silent Things was also published in 2014. Meanwhile, The Wise Man’s Fear, the second book in The Kingkiller Chronicle proper, was published in 2011.

The Narrow Road Between Desires is not The Doors of Stone

Fans have been waiting a long time to read The Doors of Stone, the next official full book in The Kingkiller Chronicle series. It’s important to note that while The Narrow Road Between Desires is set within the world of The Kingkiller Chronicle, it is not the next book in the proper series. The Doors of Stone does not have a release date yet.

However, if you’re interested in diving deeper into this world, The Narrow Road Between Desires sounds like a great read! It’s currently available wherever books are sold.
