From the studio that brought you Morbuis, watch the trailer for Madame Web
By Dan Selcke
Sony has released the first trailer for Madame Web, its latest Spider-Man-adjacent superhero movie. Will it be more like the Spider-Verse movies or more like Morbius? Watch the trailer and make your own prediction:
At first glance, the movie looks to be a bit on the cheesy side, but you know what they say: don’t judge a book by its cover, a movie by its trailer, or a financial advisor by the number of lawsuits for fraud pending against them. You have to experience things for yourself.
Madame Web stars Dakota Johnson — best known for playing Anastasia Steele in the Fifty Shades movies — as Cassandra Webb, who can see the future. Note her first name; she’d be a disappointment if she couldn’t. She gets caught up in some kind of supernatural conspiracy that also involves Julia Carpenter, who in the comics becomes Spider-Woman. Julia is played by Sydney Sweeney of Euphoria fame.
Speaking of the comics, Madame Web is a bit of an odd character to base a movie on. Traditionally, she’s depicted as an elderly woman who has psychic abilities. She usually helps Spider-Man fight crime by providing information, rather than mixing it up herself. Given that Sony is determined to create a cinematic universe based on supporting characters from the Spider-Man comic books, they have to work with what they have.
And they’re working with quite a lot. Next year, they’re releasing Kraven the Hunter in August and a third Venom movie in November. Madame Web will kick off the year on February 14. Happy Valentine’s Day, web-slingers.
Sony has produced some good Spider-movies in the past, but there have also been some clunkers, so I don’t think I’m wildly out of step with the general public when I regard Madame Web with some antipathy. But who knows? It could be great.
I’ll also remind you at this juncture that all of Sony’s Spider-movies are not officially part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, save the Tom Holland Spider-Man movies. Marvel Studios itself will take things a little easier in 2024:
