Andrezj Sapkowski gives release window for the next Witcher book
By Daniel Roman
Earlier this year, it was reported that Andrzej Sapkowski, author of the fantasy series The Witcher, was working on a new book about Geralt of Rivia. This was more than a little exciting, because Sapkowski’s Witcher Saga has been complete for some time. The original series wrapped up in 1999 with the Polish release of The Lady of the Lake, which gives a firm ending to Geralt’s tale. Sapkowski later returned to The Witcher for the standalone novel Season of Storms in 2013, a story which detailed one of Geralt’s adventures in his younger years. Since then, he’s been quiet about any plans to write more Witcher books.
But lo! The massive success of things like CD Projekt Red’s Witcher video game series and Netflix’s television show have drawn Sapkowski back to the Continent. This past weekend at Vienna Comic Con, Sapkowski gave an update about when we can finally expect to read his next Witcher book.
“[Netflix] made a series based on one story. They forced me to continue,” Sapkowski said. “I’m not complaining. Thanks to this, I now have enough money for the rent.” He also confirmed the release window for his new Witcher book: it will hit shelves in Poland in late 2024. A worldwide release will follow in early 2025.
What will the next Witcher book be about?
Sapkowski is known for his trademark sense of humor, something which absolutely translates over into Geralt’s character in the books. Could the author really not afford his rent before the Netflix show? Doubtful, but I do love how he likes to crack jokes pretty much anytime he gives a quote.
As for this next Witcher book, what it will be about remains a mystery. Back at Warsaw Comic Con in 2018, Sapkowski made it pretty clear that he has no plans to write a sequel to The Lady of the Lake. “The story is complete, the saga has been concluded, so if by any chance I write something in The Witcher universe, and I sure have such intention, it would probably be something like a prequel or a sidequel. Not a sequel.”
That’s pretty similar to what the author did with Season of Storms. Who knows what adventure Geralt will get up to this time?
As for the Netflix franchise, the most recent news on that front is that the streamer has released a teaser for its new Sirens of the Deep anime movie, which features the return of Doug Cockle as the voice of Geralt of Rivia. Cockle famously played Geralt in CD Projekt Red’s video games; needless to say, fans have been very excited at the prospect of his return.
The Witcher: Sirens of the Deep adapts Sapkowski’s short story A Little Sacrifice, which appeared in his book Sword of Destiny. It’s set to premiere in late 2024.
