Recently, Metal Gear Solid creator Hideo Kojima posted a picture of himself with D.B. Weiss, one of the creators on HBO’s Game of Thrones.

Hideo Kojima is one of the best-known video game developers working today. His Metal Gear series, about a spy named Solid Snake, has been running since 1987 and helped push video game storytelling in a more cinematic direction. In fact, if you’ve played games like Metal Gear Solid 2 or Metal Gear Solid 4, you may think you spend more time watching meticulously choreographed cutscenes than you do playing the game.

It’s obvious that Kojima loves all things Hollywood. He’s admitted that the character of Solid Snake is inspired by Snake Plissken, Kurt Russell’s character from Escape From New York. He seeks out Hollywood talent to work with; he got Hollywood composer Harry Gregson-Williams to write the (completely banging) main theme song to Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty back in 2001, a time when games didn’t have the cultural cache they have now. For Metal Gear Solid 5, he replaced the longtime voice actor for Snake, David Hayter, with Kiefer Sutherland, a bigger star. His new game series, Death Stranding, features not only the voice talents of The Walking Dead star Norman Reedus, but a main character modeled to look like him. Mads Mikkelsen plays the villain.

Knowing all this, it’s not at all surprising that Kojima would want a picture with D.B. Weiss, one of the guys behind the biggest TV show of the 2010s. But is this just a fun photo op, or another of Kojima’s Hollywood collaborations?

Hideo Kojima fans unhappy with the idea of a collaboration with Game of Thrones creator D.B. Weiss

Alongside his creative partner David Benioff, Weiss has hailed for years as one of the most influential men in TV; that’s how big Game of Thrones was. The pair are still doing very well — they have a new Netflix show 3 Body Problem, premiering next year — but their reputation among fans has taken a since the eighth and final season of Game of Thrones aired in 2019. Many fans thought it was rushed, sloppy and just plain bad.

Accordingly, some fans are nervous about the idea of Kojima — a man who has his own critics, to be sure — collaborating with Weiss. “Oh god no, please no,” writes one person on X. “NO HIDEO. RUN! RUN FAR AWAY!” adds another. “Don’t let him do anything. He won’t finish it anyway and butcher it in the end.” You get the idea.

I have no idea if this is just an innocent photo op or if it means something more; it wouldn’t be the first time Kojima made a point to take a picture with someone famous just for fun. The guy loves famous people. That said, the photos of him with Weiss look more formal and staged than your average selfie.

So is Weiss involved in Death Stranding 2? Is Kojima consulting on 3 Body Problem? We’ll keep an eye on it.
