The latest episode of Invincible, “It’s Been a While,” was one for the books. Mark Grayson reunited with his father Omni-Man, and it was very tense. But rather than joining battle again, they teamed up to fight a trio of other Viltrumites who were after Omni-Man for abandoning his post on Earth, and for marrying and having a son with a Thraxan alien. By the end of the episode, the three Viltrumites were dead, but Mark was left barely holding on and Omni-Man taken prisoner.

And unfortunately, that’s where we have to leave things for a while. Invincible won’t air the rest of its second season until sometime in 2024. We don’t have an exact release date yet.

In the meantime, there’s quite a lot to enjoy in this midseason finale. For example, it had some great music in it, starting with the scene right at the top, where we see Omni-Man wander through space after leaving Earth in the season 1 finale. As he contemplates everything he’s done, we hear a cover of Leonard Cohen’s “Avalanche,” first released on his 1971 album Songs of Love and Hate.

Cohen is probably best known for the song “Hallelujah,” which has been covered too many times to count over the years. He is an evocative lyricist, and the lyrics to “Avalanche” are as mysterious and powerful as anything in his catalog.

But we don’t hear Cohen’s original version in Invincible. Instead, it sounds like a 2015 cover done by Nick Cave for the Starz show Black Sails. Here’s that version:

Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds also recorded a version of “Avalanche” for their 1984 album From Her to Eternity.

What song plays while Debbie contemplates her life?

Later in the episode, we see Debbie Grayson wander through the streets in a daze, unable to get over the fact that was married to a man — Omni-Man, or as she knew him, Nolan — who lied to her for years and then killed thousands of people before beating their son nearly to death and leaving the planet. It would mess anyone up.

As she wanders, we hear “Olympus,” the debut single from singer Sabrina Teitelbaum, known as Blondshell. The song is a mellow, moody dirge about a woman who can’t get out of her toxic relationships, which fits Debbie very well.

What song plays when Atom Eve returns to her parents?

Finally, towards the end of the episode, another somber, slow burning track plays while Atom Eve returns home to her parents. The track continues to play as Cecil’s assistant Donald tries to find out how he’s still alive after Omni-Man killed him back in season 1. The track is the 2022 song “I Am Yesterday” by Zoe Boekbinder (featuring Gracie and Rachel).

Each of these songs is progressively more obscure and than the last, proving that Invincible has some big music fans on its staff.
