The Batman alum Archie Barnes is Oscar Tully in House of the Dragon season 2
By Dan Selcke
The second season of House of the Dragon is fast approaching, and we’re still getting new information about casting. For instance, The Way Management has confirmed that one of the actors in its roster, teenager Archie Barnes, has completed work on the second season of HBO’s Game of Thrones prequel series. According to Wake the Dragon, he’ll play Oscar Tully and will appear in at least the seventh episode of the new season.
In George R.R. Martin’s book Fire & Blood, Oscar Tully is a young warrior who becomes a leader during the Dance of the Dragons, the looming civil war between Rhaenrya Targaryen and her half-brother Aegon Targaryen for control of the Iron Throne. Read no further if you wish to avoid mild SPOILERS!
At the start of the war, Oscar’s great-grandfather Grover Tully is in charge of House Tully. Lord Grover wants to support King Aegon and his greens, but his grandson Elmo is nervous that outwardly supporting either side will just incur the wrath of the other. Over the furious objections of his bedridden grandfather, Elmo keeps Riverrun neutral but eventually declares for Rhaenyra and her blacks.
Elmo has two sons: Kermit Tully and Oscar Tully. Oscar is the younger of the two. The both of them will play supporting parts throughout the rest of the story.
Yes, the Tullys are all named after Muppets
Grover, Elmo, Kermit, Oscar…you may have noticed that all of these characters are named after characters from Sesame Street. George R.R. Martin likes to have fun with names sometimes. For instance, in A Game of Thrones, when Catelyn Stark encounters Tyrion Lannister at the Inn at the Crossroads, she enlists the help of, among others, three men-at-arms in service to House Bracken to help her arrest the scheming Lannister: Lharys, Mohor and Kurleket. That’s a reference to Larry, Moe and Curley, otherwise known as The Three Stooges. Yuk yuk yuk.
I’m happy that House of the Dragon is keeping the names, although to be fair, we don’t know if Grover, Elmo and Kermit Tully will feature. Here’s hoping.
As for Archie Barnes, he’s had a few screen roles but is pretty early on in his career. His biggest appearance so far was probably in a brief scene opposite Robert Pattinson in The Batman.
