3. General Kregg’s introduction

General Kregg is a high-ranking officer in the Viltrumite military, which aims to conquer every planet it can. On the show, we meet him in the aftermath of Mark teaming up with his father Omni-Man to fight a trio of Viltrumites in Episode 204. Kregg takes Omni-Man into custody, intending to execute him for turning his back on other Viltrumites, and charges Mark with preparing Earth for eventual Viltrumite takeover in Omni-Man’s place.

Although General Kregg’s first scene is fairly similar in the comics, the show makes him much more intimidating, largely due to Clancy Brown’s elegant voice acting performance. In a show absolutely stacked with A-list voice talent, Brown dipped into his repertoire and pulled out the same voice he utilized for Long Fang in Avatar: The Last Airbender. There’s a certain sense of “this guy is not messing around” in this version of Brown’s vocalization and is perfect for the character.

Also, on the show Kregg is a little more serious with Mark. Not that he’s gentle in the comics; he threatens to execute Mark if he doesn’t assimilate Earth. But he also gives him 100 years to do so and says that he knows Mark only retaliated against the Viltrumites because of Omni-Man. The Viltrumites also tend to Mark’s wounds in the comics, whereas on the show they just leave him beaten to a pulp with no way to get home. The whole exchange seems a lot nicer.

But in the show, Mark is about to tell Kregg to shove it and Kregg responds by punching Mark really hard. They don’t fix his stab wound and Kregg makes it clear that the Viltrumites will kill millions of people if Mark does not do what they say. The whole vibe is generally more menacing in the show thanks to Brown’s voice, the eerie music in the background, the brutal punch to the face and the sense of impending doom that the Viltrumites are coming for Earth soon. Not in 100 years.
