HBO has released the first trailer for House of the Dragon season 2, and it’s giving me chills. Watch below:

When last we left our cast of characters, Aemond Targaryen had killed his own nephew Lucerys Velaryon, mightily pissing off Luke’s mother Rhaenyra Targaryen, who is in a battle with her half-brother Aegon for control of the Iron Throne. Things will escalate in season 2 as one branch of the Targaryen family goes to war with another. “There is no war so hateful to the gods as a war between kin,” Rhaenys Targaryen tells Rhaenyra, “and no war so bloody as a war between dragons.”

If you’ve read George R.R. Martin’s book Fire & Blood, you know that these words will ring painfully, powerfully true. This season promises to have some horrifyingly memorable moments, some of which we’ve already heard about. Buckle up, y’all.

We’ll be back later with a thorough breakdown of the trailer. For now, here are some moments that stood out to me:

  • Ser Criston Cole sporting a new, shorter haircut lobbing off someone’s head on an executioner’s block.
  • Rhaenys’ line to Rhaenyra, quoted above, is the best line from the trailer.
  • Baela Targaryen riding her dragon Moondancer and screaming.
  • The Iron Throne lit by flickering lighting.
  • Two dragons staring each other down from across a beach.
  • Aemond Targaryen riding the ancient, enormous Vhagar into battle.
  • Several shots from what looks like the Battle of Rook’s Rest, which will be the big battle scene for the season.

What jumped out at you?

Unfortunately, the trailer doesn’t give us any new info about a release date. As before, all we know is that House of the Dragon season 2 will air on HBO and Max in the summer of 2024.
