HBO has dropped a trailer for the second season of House of the Dragon, its Game of Thrones prequel series. Watch below:
There’s a lot to get excited about in this trailer. We get looks at what characters like Rhaenyra Targaryen and Alicent Hightower will do now that they’re officially at war. At the end of this, one person will be on the Iron Throne and a lot of others will be dead.
A few of those people will die in season 2, some of them pretty horrifically, if the show sticks to the story as laid out in George R.R. Martin’s book Fire & Blood. One of the most upsetting scenes from the book involves two characters known to history only as Blood and Cheese. Before we say more, here’s your SPOILER warning.
Who are Blood and Cheese in House of the Dragon?
At the end of House of the Dragon season 1, Aemond Targaryen kills Rhaenyra’s son Lucerys Velaryon, taking a cold war and turning it hot. In Fire & Blood, Rhaenyra’s husband Daemon swears revenge, vowing to take a son for a son. He reaches out to his old friend Mysaria in King’s Landing, who hires a pair of mercenaries: Blood and Cheese. They sneak into the Red Keep and take Dowager Queen Alicent Hightower hostage when she’s visiting her daughter Queen Helaena. Helaena’s three children — Jaehaera, Jaehaerys and Maelor — are also present.
Blood and Cheese present Helaena with a choice: she must pick which of her sons they will kill. If she doesn’t choose, they will kill all three of her kids. Helaena eventually chooses Maelor, thinking he’s too young to understand what’s happening. Blood and Cheese kill Jaehaerys instead, and leave with the boy’s head.
It’s a pretty harrowing scene, and we’re going to see it in House of the Dragon season 2, probably early on. There’s a brief snippet of the scene in the new trailer, featuring Phia Saban as Helaena and (we think) Sam C. Wilson as Blood:
House of the Dragon season 2 will premiere on HBO and Max sometime in the summer of 2024.
