Everything we know about Fallout (Release date, location, trailer, cast and more)
By Daniel Roman
At long last, we’ve gotten our first look at Fallout, Prime Video’s new science fiction show based on the acclaimed video game series by Bethesda Softworks. With radioactive monsters, gritty bands of apocalypse survivors, intrepid Vault Dwellers and more personality than you can shake a super mutant sledgehammer at, this teaser for Fallout has plenty to get us excited for the series.
Fallout is being helmed by Westworld creators Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy, and from the looks of things, they get this franchise in a way that should reassure diehard fans of the games. Is it genius or absurd that the trailer includes the tag that it’s done by the studio that brought you “free 2 day shipping”? I don’t know, but it’s the kind of crackpot humor that fits this world so we’ll allow it.
Fallout trailer and release date
Prime Video released the first trailer for Fallout at the Brazilian fan convention CCXP, which gives us a detailed glimpse at the show:
Beyond showing off the Wasteland and major characters like Vault Dweller Lucy (Ella Purnell), Brotherhood of Steel squire Maximus (Aaron Moten) and The Ghoul (Walton Goggins), this trailer also confirmed the release date for the series. Fallout premieres on Prime Video on April 12, 2024.
What is the song in the Fallout show trailer?
One of the defining characteristics of the Fallout series is its aesthetic, which is suffused with World War II-era nostalgia but set in the post-apocalypse. That extends to the music; the games routinely had fantastic soundtracks full of golden oldies. The trailer captures that spirit with its own music choices. The song playing in the Fallout trailer is “I Don’t Want To See Tomorrow” by Nat King Cole, off his 1964 album I Don’t Want to Be Hurt Anymore.
When does the Fallout show take place?
You might be wondering about the time period of Fallout as well. According to the Vanity Fair first look article about the series, there are two time periods particularly relevant to Fallout. The story begins in 2077, when the world is living in a period of nuclear power and 1940s nostalgia. It’s during this time that a nuclear war occurs that turns the world into a radioactive wasteland.
Not everyone was on the surface when the war happened. Some privileged people were able to take shelter in underground bunkers called Vaults, which were equipped to support life for the long haul. 219 years after the meltdown, a citizen of Vault 33 named Lucy emerges out into the Wasteland on a rescue mission. That’s when the bulk of the actual story takes place, around the year 2296.
The Fallout TV show takes place around nine years after Fallout 4 and 19 years after Fallout 3. Since Fallout video game director and show executive producer Todd Howard has confirmed that the TV show is considered canon to the games, this timeline could end up being important.
Where is Vault 33? Where is Fallout set?
Location has always been important in the Fallout games, with entries taking place in Las Vegas, Boston, and Washington D.C. It will be no different in the Amazon show, which will focus on a part of the post-apocalyptic United States. Vault 33, where Lucy lives, is located in Santa Monica. So we’ll probably see what’s become of Los Angeles in the Fallout universe.
This is actually a bit of a return to form for Fallout. The first two games in the series, which were made before the franchise was acquired by game studio Bethesda Softworks, were both set in the remnants of California.
Fallout TV show cast
Now that the trailer for Fallout is out in the open, we’ve also gotten plenty of confirmations about who’s in the cast. However, many details about the characters and even most of their names are still being kept secret.
