The second season of Invincible premiered on Amazon Prime Video early in November, and before the month was out, it was apparently over. It’s not actually over — Amazon aired four episodes of season 2 and there are four more to come — but it is taking a break for a minute.

This blows for a few reasons. First, Invincible is a really good superhero show and everyone wants to watch more. Also, the second season isn’t as propulsively paced as the first, so the show risks more by going on a hiatus — even a brief one — in the middle.

On top of all that, we don’t have an official release date, just vague proclamations from producers that the rest of season 2 is coming in the near-ish future. Speaking to The Hollywood Handle on November 23 — the day before the most recent episode dropped —  co-showrunner Simon Racioppa said that the show will be back “after a few months.” Speaking on The Geekcentric Podcast a few days later, Racioppa said he hopes that viewers will be thinking about the first four episodes “for the next few weeks or… months.”

So the next four episodes of Invincible are coming out anywhere between a few weeks from now and a few months from now. That means we’ll likely get them in the first quarter of 2024, but the lack of specificity is frustrating. It makes you ask the inevitable question:

Why was Invincible split up like this?

Speaking to Tech Radar back in October, just before the second season had premiered, Racioppa outlined why they made the decision to only air half the episodes in 2023 and save the rest for 2024. “It was discussed by all parties,” he said. “When we started season 2, it wasn’t the original plan but, unfortunately, many different circumstances came up during production that made us realize this was the best way to do this.

"We want to give the fans some episodes now and then ask them to wait just a little longer for the others. So no, it wasn’t a story-based decision but, as I’m sure you know, there are a multitude of things that can happen during production that can affect your release date. We just felt this was the best way to present season 2 and get it out to the fans."

Animation is a difficult business and Invincible has a high standard of quality. Whatever happened behind the scenes, I’m sure Racioppa are working it out. It’s just a shame the issue had to cut off new episodes just as things were getting really juicy.

New episodes of Invincible will air sometime between January 1 and March 31 of 2024. See you then.
