HBO’s ambitious live-action adaptation of Naughty Dog’s beloved video game The Last of Us got 2023 off to a fantastic start. The post-apocalyptic drama will no doubt go down as one of the stand-out shows of the year, and more is on the way; HBO promptly green-lit season 2 after just three episodes had aired.
Since then, however, productions around the world went on pause for months due to the SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes. But now everything has been resolved, and The Last of Us season 2 is free to commence production.
A few weeks ago, HBO CEO Casey Bloys confirmed that The Last of Us season 2 will begin filming in early 2024, and now co-showrunner Craig Mazin has confirmed exactly when it will happen. Speaking on Variety‘s A Night in the Writers Room, Mazin revealed that shooting commences on February 12, 2024. Mark your calendars, folks. If filming is anything like season 1, we’ll see plenty of sneaky behind-the-scenes photos captured by fans.
The production of The Last of Us season 1 was one of the biggest the world had ever seen. Filming took place for almost an entire year, from July 2021 to June 2022 in British Columbia. It currently holds the record for the largest scale production in Canadian history. Given the much larger scale of season 2 (if the video games are any indication) it’s possible this production could be even bigger!
Season 2 will cover the events of Naughty Dog’s The Last of Us: Part II. The story focuses on Ellie (Bella Ramsey) as she embarks on a perilous quest and deals with a complex love life. We’re also introduced to Abby (we don’t yet know who’s playing her, a pivotal character in the story going forward. And of course Joel (Pedro Pascal) will be back, too.
Bella Ramsey wants to play the Joker!
Bella Ramsey got their breakout role as Lyanna Mormont in Game of Thrones, and of course went on to portray Ellie in The Last of Us. At just 20 years old, they have become one of the most popular young actors in Hollywood. And now, Ramsey wants to chase one of the most iconic roles in movie history: the Joker.
“I’ve not really played a villain yet” Ramsey told LADBible. “So I want to play a baddy. But like a really interesting, intricate, complex baddy.”
Who better than Gotham City’s Clown Prince of Crime? Ramsey won’t turn it down, that’s for sure. “Yeah. I was actually thinking that as well. The Joker, someone really interesting like that.”
No release date has been set for The Last of Us season 2. I wouldn’t expect it anytime soon. Perhaps sometime in 2025.
