A couple of weeks back, we learned that Netflix would not be renewing its fantasy show Shadow and Bone for a third season, bringing to an end this adaptation of Leigh Bardugo’s novels. This also means that we’ll never see a planned spinoff about the Crows, the gang of pure-hearted mercenaries led by the iron-willed Kaz Brekker, played by English actor Freddy Carter.

“Firstly, I’m just incredibly proud to have been a part of something that I loved making, and watching, and being a part of that fandom myself,” Carter told Yahoo News. “Very proud to have been a part of it, I’m very proud of the way we told the stories that we did get to tell and feel privileged to have had an insight into what the stories could have been.

"And that is obviously tinged with sadness, but mostly at the moment I’m just very proud to have been a part of something that people enjoyed as much as they did."

Freddy Carter says Kaz Brekker from Shadow and Bone was “my favorite character I have ever played”

Carter is talking as though Shadow and Bone really and truly is done, although fans are trying to save it. As of this writing, a Change.org petition to bring the show back has nearly 200,000 signatures. Carter has seen what fans are doing and thinks it’s “incredible.”

"I’ve sort of had to take a little step back because it’s almost too hard to see how many people are sad. To see it in number form, it’s like a statistic for how many people would like to have it back and it’s kind of like an amorphous thing"

Still, Carter has moved on to other projects, like his Paramount+ series The Doll Factory. But if Shadow and Bone does get a second chance, he’ll take it. “Obviously, it’s my favorite character I have ever played, and one of the favorite casts I’ve ever been a part of, so I would always love to do more. But at the moment I’m just very proud to have been a part of it.”
