Rev your engines: Twisted Metal has officially been renewed for season 2!

The adaptation of the long-running car brawler video game series roared onto Peacock earlier this year for its first season, starring Anthony Mackie (The Falcon and the Winter Soldier) as a fast-talking milkman named John Doe who was trying to traverse a dangerous post-apocalyptic United States. He came up against plenty of threatening figures along the way, including insane clown and series mascot Sweet Tooth (voiced by Will Arnett and acted by wrestler Samoa Joe). What wild characters will season 2 hold?

Mackie himself announced the news at The Game Awards, where he presented the Award for Best Ongoing Game:

I don’t know what was in Mackie’s soda that night, but can I get some? The guy was clearly having a good time at the Game Awards as he shouted back at people in the crowd, stringing along the anticipation before announcing the nominees for Best Ongoing Game.

Showrunner, writer and executive producer Michael Jonathan Smith also issued a statement about the renewal, per Variety:

"I have to give a Sweet Tooth-sized thank you to our incredible fans – I read every comment and was so blown away by everyone’s love, support, and rabid enthusiasm for a paper bag. We are beyond thankful we get to continue the story of John Doe, Quiet, and Sweet Tooth as they face off against familiar faces and new grim foes in the long-awaited Twisted Metal tournament. The mixtape is made, and I’m thrilled to get back on the road with our stellar cast and crew."

According to Peacock, Twisted Metal was its most-binged original show during the week of its release back in July, and is currently one of its top three originals of all time. I don’t know what other originals are on Peacock, so I fully believe this.

Twisted Metal season 2 likely won’t begin production until sometime next year, so I wouldn’t expect it on your screen before 2025. Although who knows; the series has half-hour episodes and relies a lot on fun character performances from seasoned actors like Mackie, Stephanie Beatriz and Thomas Hayden Church. Maybe it’ll have a faster turnaround time?

Either way, the entirety of Twisted Metal season 1 is available to binge on Peacock to tide you over.
