This was a weird year for Hollywood. For a good chunk of months in the middle, production on movies and TV shows everywhere shut down while studios sorted out first a strike by the writers of the WGA and then by the actors of SAG-AFTRA. The strikes threw a wrench into plans for many a TV show, including the throwback Star Trek series Strange New Worlds.

According to TrekMovie.com, production on Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 3 was originally supposed to start in May of this year, before the second season had even started to air on Paramount+. But then writers and actors had to go demand fair compensation and treatment, so things were pushed back. Now, actors and producers are posting from the set, so we know it’s on. Filming started on December 11, this past Monday.

Jess Bush (Nurse Christine Chapel) also posted a video from behind the scenes, although it was on Instagram Stories so it’s since self-destructed. Bush will be back along with the rest of the cast, as well as some new additions like Scottish actor Martin Quinn as Scotty. Strange New Worlds is set before even Star Trek: The Original Series, and fixtures from that show have been slowly introduced over time. Expect more as it goes forward.

Like the original show, Strange New Worlds  mostly runs on self-contained episodes, although there is a little more serialization than there was in the ’60s, with the reptilian Gorn aliens featuring as recurring villains. Strange New Worlds season 3 won’t be out as soon as Paramount+ was planning, but with filming underway, we’re betting they can still start rolling out episodes sometime in 2024.

Filming on Star Trek: Section 31 movie starts in January

Meanwhile, Paramount+ is also working on a new Star Trek movie centered around Michelle Yeoh’s character from Star Trek: Discovery, Philippa Georgiou. “In Star Trek: Section 31, Emperor Philippa Georgiou, joins a secret division of Starfleet tasked with protecting the United Federation of Planets and faces the sins of her past,” reads the official description.

Filming on Section 31 is set to start on Monday, January 29 and run for six weeks, wrapping up in March. So although the master plan for the Star Trek mega-franchise may have been briefly interrupted, it’s very much on the move again.

While we expect Strange New Worlds season 3 to be out in 2024, it’s a little harder to know about Section 31. There’ll be lots of Trek in any case, though. In addition to Strange New Worlds, 2024 will also feature new seasons of Star Trek: Discovery and Star Trek: Prodigy.
