The DC Universe is all over the place, and fans are pretty confused. On one side, we’ve got standalone franchises like The Batman and Joker. Then there are the loose ends of the old DCEU continuity, with movies like The Flash and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom. And then there’s James Gunn and Peter Safran’s upcoming DC refresh, which will press the reset button and build out its own continuity beginning with Superman: Legacy. What does this mean for all other beloved DC heroes?

Well, the simple answer is that recasts will happen and the old DC Extended Universe will become a thing of history. For instance, Henry Cavill will no longer play Superman; that duty has fallen to David Corenswet. And now Cavill’s Justice League costar Jason Momoa has resigned himself to the fact that he’ll probably never get to return to the role of Aquaman after the upcoming movie Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom. “I don’t necessarily want it to be the end… [but] I don’t think it’s really, like, a choice,” Momoa told ET Online.

All Momoa can ask of fans is to support the new movie, and perhaps it’ll generate enough hype to merit another sequel. “The truth of it is, I mean, if the audience loves it, then there’s a possibility,” he said. “But right now, I’m like, ‘It’s not looking too good.'”

It feels crazy to omit Momoa from any future projects. He’s proven himself to be the perfect Aquaman. The casting team will be hard-pressed to find someone better. Plus, Momoa is not ready to wave goodbye to the King of Atlantis anytime soon.

"I love this character and [I would want to] play it for a long time. I kind of see where I would want it to go. And even in the next 10 years or so, like there’s a lot of cool things they can do. And I do enjoy the role and the world. So, I mean, it just comes down to if people love it."

Currently, Gunn and Safran’s DC Universe doesn’t have an Aquaman movie in its slate yet. But if at any point they do, Momoa hopes to get a phone call. “If there’s a place in their world for me, I would love to be a part of it,” he said.
