Percy Jackson and the Olympians is a new show based on the book series of the same name by author Rick Riordan. It’s about a young boy named Percy who discovers that he’s actually the son of the Greek god Poseidon, meaning he has access to special powers. He meets other demigods at a summer camp called Camp Half-Blood. Action, adventure and romance ensue.

This isn’t the first time the Percy Jackson books have been adapted. In 2019, 20th Century Fox put out Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief. Then, in 2013, it put out the sequel Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters. Those movies were based on the first and second books in Riordan’s series.

The Percy Jackson movies had their fans but were mostly met with a chorus of “meh” from audiences and critics alike. The new show sticks much closer to the source material and has thus far gotten much better reviews.

How many Percy Jackson books are there?

It’s easy to name all the Percy Jackson movies; there are only two. Things get more complicated when we talk about the books.

To start, there are six books in the mainline Percy Jackson and the Olympians series, the most recent of which came out just this year. They are:

  1. The Lightning Thief
  2. The Sea of Monster
  3. The Titan’s Curse
  4. The Battle of the Labyrinth
  5. The Last Olympian
  6. The Chalice of the Gods

However, Riordan has written other series where Percy and his friends play important roles, like the Heroes of Olympus series. It may not have Percy Jackson’s name in the title, but he’s a major character in these five books:

  1. The Lost Hero
  2. The Son of Neptune
  3. The Mark of Athena
  4. The House of Hades
  5. The Blood of Olympus

Percy also appears in Riordan’s series Magnus Chase and the Gods of Asgard and The Trials of Apollo. And he narrates Greek myths in Riordan’s books Percy Jackson and the Greek Gods and Percy Jackson and the Greek Heroes.

In short, there are a lot of opportunities to read about Percy Jackson out there. Check out our complete guide below:
