It's an unfortunate fact that, as television fans, we're always one announcement away from our favorite shows being taken away from us. We can all inevitably remember where we were when we heard that our favorite show was canceled. If you're a fan of fantasy shows, you can absolutely remember the exact reaction from the fandom when your chosen show was abruptly canned.
Fantasy fans might be some of the most devoted, because you can guarantee we will fight to save our shows and launch petitions that reach millions of signatures. Sometimes the efforts aren't successful, but that doesn't change the tenacity. There have been so many regrettable cancellation decisions made over the years about fantasy shows that deserved so much better.
Obviously, the most recent example of a fantasy TV show cancellation we're not getting over anytime soon is Prime Video's The Wheel of Time, but there are endless examples of shows that ended before their time. We've chosen four of the most recent, most popular, and most acclaimed fantasty TV shows that were canceled, and these are cancellations fans didn't take lightly.

The Wheel of Time
After three seasons, a series that culminated with 24 episodes, Prime Video made the extremely polarizing decision to cancel The Wheel of Time in May 2025. The cancellation was met with immediate derision from fans, who quickly mobilized a campaign effort to reverse the cancellation or get the show picked up elsewhere. To date, the show based on the book series by Robert Jordan hasn't had a change of fate just yet.
It seems a bit trite to simply say that The Wheel of Time deserved more, but is it trite if it's the truth? The cancellation was explained away as a financial decision and that season 3 was meant to give fans closure, but season 3 really did nothing of the sort. Fans were hoping for and expecting season 4, but having the rug pulled out from under them stung. A complete story should have been told, but The Wheel of Time wasn't given the chance to do so.

Shadow and Bone
Based on the Shadow and Bone book trilogy by Leah Bardugo, the series adaptation hit Netflix in 2021 and became a runaway fan-favorite. The Netflix series also integrated Bardugo's Six of Crows duology, which is also based in the Grishaverse. The second season, which ultimately became the final season, arrived in 2023 with an unfortunate thud, having lost a bit of momentum likely due to the much too long two-year wait in between seasons.
Although the second season adapted the second two books in Bardugo's trilogy, the Shadow and Bone series on Netflix changed a lot of the story and rushed to tell the complete story. Still, fans were hoping to see a third season come to fruition or maybe even a Six of Crows spinoff, which had been teased by showrunner Eric Heisserer. Sadly, the show's cancellation has seemingly nixed a return to the Grishaverse, and we'll never quite get over what could have been.

My Lady Jane
You know a cancellation strikes a nerve when even one of the most famous fantasy authors of all time chimes in. That's what happened when Prime Video canceled the fan-favorite historical drama series My Lady Jane after only one season. Even if you hadn't watched the show, you definitely heard about it during the summer of 2024. It earned both critical acclaim and was seemingly being watched by a passionate fanbase. But the axe still dropped on this show.
Obviously, My Lady Jane's cancellation, which came barely two months after the show was released, was met with anger and frustration from fans. Game of Thrones mastermind George R. R. Martin became involved and shared the petition to save the show. Imagine having GRRM fed up about a fantasy TV show cancellation! Talk about embarrassing. Still, his support wasn't enough to get the show back on the air. It'll forever be a one hit wonder.

Warrior Nun
If you had a social media account in the fall of 2022 and were tuned into online fandoms, then you're well aware that Warrior Nun fans didn't react kindly when Netflix canceled the series after two seasons. Another unfortunate victim of a post-pandemic two-year gap between seasons, Warrior Nun seemed to lose momentum even though diehard fans definitely tuned into season 2's drop. For some reason, it wasn't enough for Netflix to renew the show for season 3.
Online campaigns, petitions, and everything you can imagine followed in an effort to save the show fans loved, but Netflix didn't walk back the decision. In 2023, executive producer Dean English revealed that Warrior Nun would return as a trilogy of films, but as of August 2025, no significant movement has been made on that front. The story could still continue in the future, but right now, Warrior Nun simply remains a canceled fantasy show we'll never get over.
