Three decades after George R.R. Martin's fantasy epic first hit bookstore shelves, fans can now get their hands on what might be the most luxurious version of A Game of Thrones ever created.

The Folio Society, known for their high-end book releases, is dropping a seriously impressive 30th anniversary edition that's been handcrafted by British artisans, as reported by People. We're talking about a collector's dream that looks like it was pulled straight from the Citadel's library.

The 30th anniversary limited edition looks stunning

The book itself is wrapped in something called "dragon leather" that's textured to actually look like dragon scales. The deep red binding gives off major Targaryen energy, and the whole thing screams premium quality from the moment you see it. But the dragon leather is just the beginning. The 872-page tome comes housed in a white clamshell box that's absolutely covered in gold foil work featuring dragons and house sigils.

There's even an icy illustration on the front that gives off White Walker vibes. The page edges? Gold-gilded, naturally. Inside, you'll find brand new artwork by Jonathan Burton throughout the book. Burton deliberately avoided referencing the HBO show, keeping the illustrations true to Martin's original vision.

The book also includes handmade endpapers with a custom watermark, plus a rolled map of Westeros to help you navigate the Seven Kingdoms.

Joe Abercrombie wrote an exclusive introduction for this edition adding to an already stacked package.

The craftsmanship behind it

Folio Society editor James Rose explained that they worked with some of the finest craftspeople in Britain to make this happen. The dragon-scale leather came from specialized leather makers, the bespoke endpapers were created at the James Cropper paper mill and Ludlow Bookbinders are handling the binding for each individual copy.

“This volume is so stunning it could have been taken directly from the Citadel library itself,” Rose shared in a press release to People.

Everything from the leather headbands and tailbands to the two-color printing process was carefully planned out. The clamshell box features a blocked Game of Thrones symbol on the inside with both gold and silver blocking on the outside.

Only 1,000 copies will be available

The most important information about the anniversary edition is that only 1,000 copies are being made. And each one will be personally signed by George R.R. Martin himself.

The price tag? A cool $2,200.

For serious collectors and superfans who've been waiting decades for The Winds of Winter, this might be the ultimate consolation prize.

When can you get it?

The 30th anniversary edition goes on sale July 14, 2026, at 4pm UK time (11am Eastern / 8am Pacific), through the Folio Society website. Given that there are only 1,000 copies and the Game of Thrones fanbase numbers in the millions, these are going to sell out fast.

This year marks 30 years since A Game of Thrones was first published in 1996, launching one of the biggest fantasy phenomena in modern literature. The book spawned a multi-million-selling series, an HBO blockbuster that became a cultural event and enough fan theories to fill the Citadel's library twice over.

For those who can afford it and manage to snag one before they're gone, this limited edition is the ultimate way to own the book that started it all.

Winter is coming. And so is this absolutely gorgeous book.
