A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms actor Bertie Carvel reveals whether he'd return in future seasons

When it premiered earlier this year, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms was a monumental success. The prequel, set roughy 90 years before the events of Game of Thrones, took things in a completely different direction, both in terms of tone and structure.

Rather than following a large ensemble of characters in different locations, the six-episode series instead follows hedge knight Ser Duncan (Peter Claffey) as he tries to make a name for himself in Westeros.

Could Baelor return in a flashback? Bertie Carvel would return

While there's no way for a character like Baelor Targaryen (Bertie Carvel), who dies in episode 5, “In the Name of the Mother,” to return looking forward, the show could theoretically mark his comeback in a flashback sequence. Baelor's story is a key turning point in Dunk's life; he is one of the first people to really believe in him as a knight.

There are no flashbacks featuring Baelor in George R.R. Martin's Dunk & Egg novellas, but should showrunner Ira Parker want to bring him back an a future sequence, Carvel is open to the prospect.

"I couldn’t possibly say, but I’m very open to that," Carvel told Screen Rant on the possibility of him reprising the role. However, in order to return, scheduling and other issues would have to fall into place.

"You’re asking the wrong person,” he laughed. “I wouldn’t be surprised if that idea had been floated, but there are often practical concerns, like people’s availability, the budget, and things like that. But I would be delighted to return to the role.”

“But I would be delighted to return to the role,” Carvel added.

In A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, Ser Duncan looks to enlist in a tourney at Ashford Meadow. While on his way, he meets Egg (Dexter Sol Ansell), better known as the young Aegon V Targaryen, who he make his squire. But of course, Dunk ultimately finds himself in way over his head when he is challenged to a trial of seven by Aerion Targaryen (Finn Bennett). Struggling to find knights to fight for him, Dunk discovers an unlikely supporter in Baelor, an avid believer in duty and chivalry, who fights for his cause against his own nephew.

Seeing Baelor fight for the honor of Dunk is one of the most surprising elements of the season. And yet, he is not only prepared to die to protect the honor of an unknown knight — he does die in battle. His death is unequivocal, with a lethal blow to back of the head. He manages to survive for moments, but the second his helmet is removed, his shattered skull is completely dislodged.

Given the placement of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms in the timeline of the franchise, we likely won't be seeing Baelor again in any other current or future spinoff. Any return would rely almost entirely on a flashback sequence in A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms seasons 2 or 3, which will adapt “The Sworn Sword” and “The Mystery Knight” respectively.
