A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms to continue filming in Gran Canaria after set flooding

This never would have happened if Baelor was king.

Last week, filming on the second season of HBO's Game of Thrones spinoff A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms took an unexpected turn when the production's sets at Presa de Las Niñas dam in Gran Canaria, Spain, where flooded by historic levels of rainfall. This submerged sets the show had built for filming, enough that the shoot had to be paused, with local news outlet Atlántico Hoy reporting that it would move those scenes to a new location on the Spanish mainland.

But now we have another report from Atlántico Hoy that indicates A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms isn't quite done with Gran Canaria, yet. The outlet has confirmed that tents have been raised for the production at La Fortaleza de Ansite — The Fortress — an imposing, mountainous area with a cavern that was once used by Gran Canaria's native islanders to resist the forces of Conquistador Pedro de Vera. It's located at Las Tirajanas Ravine, around 37 kilometers southeast of Las Niñas dam.

Given the towering slopes and rocky terrain of La Fortaleza, I have a feeling A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms won't encounter any similar flooding issues there.

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms season 2 has multiple filming sites in Gran Canaria

Intriguingly, the tents set up at La Fortaleza were not put up since the flooding at Las Niñas dam; Atlántico Hoy confirmed they have been on site since March 15, long before the sets at the dam were flooded earlier this month. That means A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms had multiple locations staked out for filming on Gran Canaria from the start.

And really, that makes sense. There are scenes in George R.R. Martin's novella "The Sworn Sword" which do take place at a dam, which would obviously make sense to film at a location like Presa de Las Niñas, with its nearby water and wooded surroundings. By contrast, La Fortaleza features dramatic mountain terrain and a commanding view of the nearby countryside. These two settings are not interchangeable.

As Atlántico Hoy states, this confirms that A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is not leaving Gran Canaria as a whole; it's simply filming the scenes it had planned for Las Niñas dam on the mainland peninsula, in a location that hasn't yet been reported. This is good for Gran Canaria, since it's estimated that the production is expected to bring in about 20 million euros for the island's economy. It's also good for A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, because it means that while a new location is scouted out to replace Las Niñas dam, the production still has other scenes it can film so that it's not losing as much time as it might have otherwise.

For now, we keep our ear to the ground and our eyes peeled for more ravens with news about A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms season 2. Barring any more surprises, filming is expected to wrap up in June, with the new season premiering sometime in 2027.
