The Star Wars Universe has explored numerous different avenues in recent years, whether its the super-successful The Mandalorian, the meddling kids of Skeleton Crew, or the more mature story in Star Wars: Andor. There's plenty of other genres and styles to go down. It turns out that Disney is already looking at ways to introduce a horror project into the franchise.
Let's get the obvious out of the way first: Currently, no Star Wars horror project has been officially announced. So why are we even discussing it? Well, in a recent interview with Business Insider, Andor showrunner Tony Gilroy spilled that there have been discussions about a foray into horror, whether as a movie or TV show, we don't know. “They're doing that. I think they're doing that,” Gilroy revealed. “I think that's in the works, yeah.”
Specifically speaking about his series Andor, Gilroy explained that the possibilities for stories within the Star Wars universe are endless. "The right creator, and the right moment, and the right vibe … you can do anything,” he said. “So, my hope is that the show connects, and then we can pass along the favor that we were given from 'Mandalorian,' and we can pass along a good healthy backwind to someone else who wants to do something else cool."
Even Mark Hamill wants a Star Wars horror movie
A Star Wars horror project could work incredibly well. I'm thinking something along the lines of Alien; suspenseful, gripping, violent, visceral horror. It'd be a work unlike anything we've seen in the franchise to date. Even Luke Skywalker himself, Mark Hamill, has previously rhapsodized about the idea of a horror project where someone is haunted by a Force Ghost: "A Force Ghost that's, like, actually frightening," he told IGN. "Not somebody that's beatifically smiling down from the clouds or coming to give exposition - you know, a ghost is scary! But we'll see. My work here is done."
Would you like to see a horror Star Wars project? What does it look like? Someone trapped in the bowels of Jabba the Hutt's dungeon, trying to escape? Malevolent Sith trying to harness the power of the Force and releasing an unknowable eldritch horror? Tell us in the comments down below!
In the meanwhile, the second and final season of Andor will premiere on Disney+ on Tuesday, April 22. The second season will have 12 episodes in all, with three being dropped at a time every week.
