Apple TV's hit Severance is a far stretch from your typical workplace drama; it's a high-concept, twisty, dystopian series where the weirdness is enough to make David Lynch proud.
Created by Dan Erickson and produced by Ben Stiller, Severance is easily one of the most acclaimed and celebrated shows on streaming in recent years. So far, it's aired two seasons. A third outing is on the way—and it might be hitting our screens sooner than expected. Well, we shouldn't be left hanging for another three years like last time, at least.
Like most sci-fi and fantasy shows nowadays, Severance takes a long time to make. The first season debuted on Apple TV in February 2022, and it didn't return for its sophomore outing until January 2025. That's pretty much three years of waiting. And given that it's an original series with no source material, it's taken the team plenty of time to write the third season, but now scripts are ready and production is poised to start ramping up. And that’s not the only good news.
Severance season 3 starts filming “very soon,” should release in 2027
Filming is expected to commence imminently. But don't take it from us. During a recent red carpet interview with Radio Times at an Apple TV event for the BAFTA Awards, star Adam Scott confirmed that filming gets underway "very soon," adding: "We're all super, super excited. It's been a couple years since we finished shooting season 2, so... we all can't wait to get back to it."
As for when the the third season will drop, Scott couldn’t confirm, but he did promise one thing, as reported by Deadline: “We’re definitely planning on getting it out much sooner than the last round, which was three years, which is too long.” Fans can all agree with this, but it’s a pleasant surprise to hear this coming from the show’s star and one of the executive producers. We would’ve guessed it’d be another three years before we’d get to see new episodes.
Severance never fails to subvert fan expectations; it's a show that forces viewers to enter with an open mind. Look no further than the season 2 premiere, which immediately introduced new team of severed Lumon employees in Macrodata Refinement.
As for how season 3 will open, Scott simply implores viewers to trust the process. "I can't say anything about the third season, but I think that people that enjoy the first two are going to love what the show does," he teased.
Should filming wrap later this year, a 2027 release date is very reachable. And, of course, 2028 would make it three years between seasons again, something Scott is promising won’t happen. So we’ll have to keep our fingers crossed it all works out this way.
In the meantime, Severance seasons 1-2 are now streaming on Apple TV.
