Agatha All Along Season 1, Episode 5: Teen's identity is finally revealed!
By Ariba Bhuvad
In last week's episode of Agatha All Along Rio (Aubrey Plaza) informed Agatha (Kathryn Hahn) that Teen (Joe Locke) was not her boy, as some fans had been guessing. I think we can all agree that would have been too obvious anyway, but Teen's identity has been a constant point of speculation since the series began, and after this week, we know exactly who he is.
This week's episode, "Darkest Hour, Wake Thy Power," has the coven facing their third trial. This one places Agatha herself at the center, just as Alice (Ali Ahn) was in last week's trial. What ensues is a chaotic ride that leads to a huge reveal that Marvel fans saw coming from a mile away.
Without further ado, let's get into the major moments of this week's episode of Agatha All Along! BEWARE MAJOR SPOILERS AHEAD!
The Salem Seven
"Darkest Hour, Wake Thy Power" picks up with the Salem Seven chasing the coven down out of pure hatred for Agatha. As it turns out, when Agatha killed her previous coven, she decided to spare the lives of their children. Well, these children grew up to be vengeful and bloodthirsty and bent on avenging the death of their mothers. Enter the Salem Seven, who got in because the door to the Witches' Road wasn't completely closed when the coven first entered.
With the Salem Seven looking to take these witches down, they have to act quick and escape. For witches, that means hopping on a broom and flying away! Or at least that's what Teen thinks, but the reality is that witches don't like to use brooms if they can avoid it; too commercial. But here they have no choice but to quickly make brooms from the roots of nearby trees and hightail it out of here. Even Teen gets to join this magical ride as the coven flies away into the sky and away from the Salem Seven.
But the road doesn't let them enjoy their magical broom ride for too long as it pulls them back down to earth and onto their next trial.
The third trial
The coven barely makes it inside the next trial as the Salem Seven close in on them. Happily, they can't get inside the newest house. The coven is safe for the time being rocking some new outfits fit for a 1980s slumber party.
While last week's trial involved music and a ballad performance by the coven, this week the focus is on punishing Agatha, or at least that's what the spirit inside the Ouija board seems to want. At first, Agatha doesn't seem to take the trial too seriously; the board spells out MRSHART and she proceeds to pretend that she is possessed by the spirit of Mrs. Hart, or rather Sharon Davis. It's a clever way for her to avoid whatever task lies ahead, but with time ticking and only 30 minutes to solve the trial, Agatha has to get it together.
The Ouija board ends up revealing that Death is looking to punish Agatha. The coven (especially Jen) is convinced that until and unless Agatha is truly punished, they aren't passing the trial. Agatha does her best to persuade them otherwise, but the board made it clear what their objective is.
As the lights go out, Agatha goes missing, and is soon discovered hovering atop the ceiling Grudge/Exorcist style. She is seemingly possessed by something or someone and is no longer pretending. She's got the classic look of a possession with the whited out eyes, cracked skin, and the thirst to kill.
The coven soon learns that Agatha was possessed by her mother Evanora Harkness, who appears in ghost form after leaving her daughter's body. She demands that the rest of the coven go on and finish the Witches' Road without Agatha. It is the one and true way to punish Agatha, and it would truly destroy her.
The witches entertain the idea until Alice intervenes and uses her powers to push Evanora out of Agatha's body. Taking advantage of the moment, Agatha steals Alice's power, literally sucking the life out of her leaving Alice...dead. Yes, DEAD. Ugh, Agatha, why?!
All the while, the Ouija board is going crazy and spells out "NICHOLASSCRATCH" which Teen reads out as Agatha continues to take Alice's powers. It isn't until she seemingly hears her son's name that she stops and starts walking out the door that has opened since the trial has now been been completed.
Everyone else is distraught over the fact Alice is dead, but Agatha is just in her own selfish world. She doesn't seem to care what she's done, but she has at least some of her powers back thanks to Alice and is looking to forge ahead.
Ending of Agatha All Along Season 1, Episode 5 explained: Who is Teen?
Teen couldn't care less about Agatha getting her powers back; he's distraught over Agatha just killing Alice like that. “So that’s what it means to be a witch? Killing people to serve your own agenda?” Teen says. “Not for me.”
There is something about what he says that prompts Agatha to reply with a simpering smirk, and it's the BIG moment we had all been waiting for. “Are you sure?" she whispers. "You’re so much like your mother.”
So much like...his mother?! Like the Scarlet Witch?!
It would appear that Agatha is certain about Teen's identity now, as are we: he's none other than Wanda Maximoff's son, Billy Kaplan, aka Wiccan! All the theories were right! It is indeed him!
How do we know this? Well, Agatha's comment pisses Billy off, and we see blue magic start emanating from his hands. He takes over the bodies of Jen and Lilia, who then grab Agatha and throw her into the mud, which envelops her just like it once did Mrs. Hart. He then proceeds to do the same to both Jen and Lilia as well as the camera cuts back and reveals a crown much like the one that the Scarlet Witch wears across Billy's head.
If that isn't a confirmation of Teen's identity, then I don't know what is!
