Alan Tudyk promises that smartass droid K-2SO will bring humor to Andor season 2

The second and final season of Star Wars: Andor will FINALLY air next year, and it's bringing in more of the cast from the Star Wars spinoff movie Rogue One.

Rogue One was the unlikeliest of Star Wars success stories: a spinoff movie revolving around an entirely new cast of characters trying to steal plans for the Death Star. And then at the end everybody...well, I guess I shouldn't spoil things explicitly. The movie came out in 2016; you can find out happens if you want.

In any case, Rogue One was a big hit at the box office, but it was still surprising when we heard that Disney was going to make a spinoff TV show about supporting character Cassian Andor, a rebel willing to give anything in the fight against the Empire. Once again, Andor turned into an unlikely success; many fans consider it the best Star Wars TV show Disney has yet made.

The upcoming second season of Andor will bring back more of the Rogue One cast, including K-2SO, a reprogrammed Imperial droid given to sarcasm and back talk. He's voiced by Alan Tudyk, a workhorse actor known for TV shows like Firefly and Resident Alien as well as movies like I, Robot. This guy works a lot; I guarantee you've seen him somewhere.

Essentially, K-2SO is the comic relief of Rogue One. Like that movie, Andor can be a pretty grim show, so I'm not opposed to K-2SO coming on the scene and lending some levity. “Yeah, I’m gonna be in it," Tudyk recently confirmed to Collider. "I can't tell you how much, so I still have secrets and I can't say anything about it, but it was fun to be back with Diego Luna.”

"Tony Gilroy is a very skilled writer. He's a big-brained guy. It’ll be interesting for people to see K-2SO in that world because he was such a smartass, and there was a lot of humor around his being there."

I imagine we'll actually see K-2SO transform from an Imperial droid to a reluctant rebel warrior, probably complaining the whole time. I'm there.

Tudyk couldn't reveal any specifics — Disney has spies everywhere — but he went right up to the line: “That will be a fresh… I don't know. We’ll see! Let’s just watch it.”

The second season of Andor will also be its last, and will complete Cassian's transformation from jaded loner to committed freedom fighter. It's due to air sometime in 2025, which means fans will have been waiting nearly three years for new episodes. That's a long time — the Hollywood writers and actors strikes in 2023 pushed things back a bit — but Andor has been good enough that I almost believe it will be worth it.
