Amazon's Fallout reaches over 100 million viewers (but season 2 still sounds far off)
By Dan Selcke
Fallout, based on the video series of the same name, debuted on Amazon Prime Video this past April, and it was an immediate hit. The show captured the spirit of the games, mixing post-apocalyptic sci-fi with black humor and drama. The casting was perfection, with special shout-outs going out to Ella Purnell as naive vault-dweller Lucy, Aaron Moten as Brotherhood of Steel member Maximus, and Walton Goggins as the amoral Ghoul. Amazon pretty much immediately ordered a new season; we only wish it had done so sooner, so we wouldn't have to wait as long for new episodes.
Amazon might be feeling that way too, since it sounds like the show has continued to draw in viewers all these months later. The other week, the company announced that 100 million people had watched the first season of the show. Just under six months out from the first season dropping on April 10, that's quite the achievement.
Fallout isn't the only show posting those kinds of numbers. Last week, it was announced that the first season of Prime Video's Lord of the Rings prequel show The Rings of Power had racked up 150 million viewers, which is very impressive. But keep in mind that the first season of The Rings of Power only hit that number after it had been available for two years, where the first season of Fallout pulled in 100 million viewers after only six months. Also, while Fallout isn't a cheap show to make, it costs a good deal less than the famously expensive The Rings of Power, so I'm betting it gets Amazon more bang for its buck.
Ella Purnell has no idea when Fallout season 2 is coming
There's room for everybody, of course, but if future seasons of Fallout keep up the quality we saw in season 1, it could become a behemoth. Producers see it running for several seasons beyond season 2, which we hope comes out sometime in 2026; unfortunately I don't see a reality where it releases any sooner than that.
In fact, according to Ella Purnell, it doesn't even sound like things are moving at all on the actors side. “I’m excited, I really cannot wait. I don’t have anything, I don’t know when we’re going to do it, I don’t have a script. I have literally nothing," she recently told Discussing Film. "I don’t even know if I’m in it. I hope I’m in it. I think I’m in it. No, I’m probably in it…I really want to get going. I need to start practicing my accent again and getting back into the Lucy headspace.”
I assume that writing on season 2 is chugging along, but apparently not to the point where they've involving the actors. Ah well; it'll be along sooner or later.
