It's another exciting news day for content creator-led movies in the entertainment industry. Charlie White, a.k.a MoistCr1TiKaL on Twitch and Penguinz0 on YouTube, is working with Powerhouse Animation and Lyrical Animation to adapt his indie hit comic GODSLAP.

The title sort of slaps you in the face, doesn't it? Well, that's all intentional. GODSLAP follows a young man, Aius Braun, born with the incredible power of slapping. He can kill and obliterate foes with the mere open palm of his bare hand. His father, fearing this unhinged ability, hid him from the world. Unfortunately, tragedy takes everything from Aius, and he's thrust onto a quest to eradicate the evil company and crime bosses who rule the world. The comic is popular with fans of MoistCr1TiKal and comic readers alike, having sold over 100,000 copies worldwide.

The superpowers in GODSLAP are inspired by a real sport called Power Slap, which Charlie White is a huge fan of. Opponents would slap each other until one yields or is knocked out. White took this premise and turned the notch up to an eleven. Eleven thousand.

Charlie White announces GODSLAP movie

GODSLAP is published by White's company, Bad Egg Publishing, with several issues in circulation, but it was always White's dream to have animations for his beloved series. Per his announcement video, he initially commissioned Powerhouse Animation for short videos to post on his YouTube channel. Then, he realized just how expensive that'd be, and didn't pursue contacting them. To his surprise, 3 years ago today, Powerhouse Animation reached out with enthusiasm to adapt GODSLAP into a feature-length movie.

"This has been one of the biggest dreams I've had since I was a child," White says.

The movie is still in production, with about two years until its theatrical release. Fans have known about this project for a while, and knowing the wait is just a little longer is incredibly exciting. GODSLAP is a fully 2D-animated film, and fully financed out of White's pocket. If the movie's full production time is approximately five years of hard work going into every drawn frame, then we're in for something special. You can watch the teaser below:

Lyrical Animation is producing, a studio that is also working with another YouTube creator, Seán McLoughlin, a.k.a JackSepticEye, on an animated Bloodborne movie. On GODSLAP, Kellan Stover is directing, with a script by Daniel Dominguez, Lyrical Animation‘s Creative Director, and Jacob Robinson, Head of Lyrical Animation. Powerhouse Animation is animating the film, the studio behind Netflix shows Castlevania and Castlevania: Nocturne.

The rise of content creator-led movies

In recent months and in the past, we've already seen how successful creator-led movies can be. Iron Lung (Mark Edward Fischbach, a.k.a Markeiplier), Obsession (Curry Barker), Backrooms (Kane Parsons, a.k.a Kane Pixels), and The Amazing Digital Circus (Gooseworx), all released this year, smashing records and impressing fans. Thanks to these high-profile projects, and most notably Backrooms, Hollywood studios are looking to more independent artists for possible film adaptations.

Earlier this week, AMC Theatres announced a new distribution label, Leawood Films. Every day, it's becoming easier and easier for small creators and filmmakers to get noticed and put their work on the big screen, whether you have the money or not.

Charlie White's GODSLAP movie is planned for a theatrical release in 2028.
